Assignment Task:

Scenario:

The presentation of this assignment should be clear throughout, showing the natural progression of your project as it takes place.  Supplementary information such as photographs, charts, layouts, planning, results, communications, can be included alongside your text or referenced within your text and placed in a clearly identified appendices. For clarity, it is recommended a minimum of font 12, and a paragraph line spacing of 1.5 is used.

Remember to use appropriate critical analysis and evaluation techniques to analyse your project findings as well as analyse your own behaviour and performance during this project and suggest areas for improvement. You should also critically analyse these project outcomes making recommendations for further development as well as seek formative feedback at timely periods of the course of your project's lifespan.

Learning Objective 01: Formulate and Plan a Project that will Provide a Solution to an Identified Engineering Problem:

The Project Management Plan

You are therefore required to answer the following tasks:

You are to carry out an engineering project, using as your theme: reliability and its guiding principles. In reporting on the first part of the project the following steps should be followed:

Task 01:
Describe the process which led to your chosen project. What alternative projects did you consider before making your final choice? Describe fully the reasons for your decisions and final choice.
Suggestions - your place of work, hobbies or interests, class discussion. Discuss your project choice with your tutor.

Task 02:
Create a project plan which will enable completion of the project within the time-frame allowed and using available resources. Create milestones within the plan to allow project reviews to occur. Quantify the project specification in such a way that it can be used at the end of the project to help evaluate your success

Task 03:
Describe what and explain how your assets, financial and available skills and manpower contributed to your project choice, justify their use and how they will be organised in order to be able to carry out the project.

Task 04:
Explain how ethical frameworks and regulatory bodies have affected your choice of project and how the principles of reliability have modified your choice, plans and potential review of the outcome.

Learning Outcome 02: Conducting Project Activities, of which Record Progress against the Original Project Plan:

Having previously selected your project, written your initial specification and considered the procedures that you intend to adopt, it is in this assignment that the main project is performed.  In the next and final assignment, you will be asked to submit your logbook and other developmental work along with your final presentation. Remember you can improve your specification at this point if necessary.

Remember to record the day to day developmental process of your project using a suitable media of your choice such as a project diary or logbook, remember this is a working document to help you, it does not need to be neat and can include your rough notes, jottings and sketches; it will provide evidence for LO3 and LO4, the next and final assessment.

You are therefore required to answer the following tasks:

Task 05:
Detail your resources, which includes, but is not limited to, materials, components, tools, technical software and the like. Your planning should include planned and actual costs as appropriate and provide evidence of how you are recording progress against the original project plan. A Log Book and/ or PERT Chart would be recommended here.

Task 06:
Explain the development process in a formal manner taking your project from the specification stage through to development, planning, manufacture, implementation and evaluation.  Show the progress and the decisions made using appropriate technical methods.

Task 07:
Throughout the length of your project, you should document and record all relevant data sheets, which may include but is not limited to, minutes of meetings, correspondence, email chains and the like. These should be incorporated into your project in an appropriate manner. Your costs and savings should be evaluated for the project using suitable methods as appropriate to you. You should also explore alternative methods to monitor and meet project milestones, justifying your selection of chosen method(s).

Task 08:
Your project report should include your reflections as well as detailing any errors made so far, suggesting what could have been done better. You should critically reflect and evaluate the success of your project plan making recommendations for improvements. You may link this to Task 05 by providing evidence of how you are documenting and recording your project's progress.

Learning Outcome 03: An Analysis of the Outcomes, Processes and Conclusions of your Project:

Learning Outcome 04: Present the Project Report Drawing Conclusions on the Outcomes of the Project:

In this next and final section, you required to submit your logbook and other developmental work along with your final presentation. You should analyse the outcomes of each of the project processes and stages as well as draw conclusions on the outcomes of the project.

Remember to use appropriate critical analysis and evaluation techniques to analyse your project findings as well as analyse your own behaviour and performance during this project and suggest areas for improvement. You should also critically analyse these project outcomes making recommendations for further development.

You are therefore required to answer the following tasks:

Task 09:
Did you achieve your original goal as detailed in your specification?  Make reference to any difficulties experienced and explain how you overcame them. These should be recorded in your logbook and cross-referenced to a tracking sheet so that the assessor can easily identify your comments.

You should also show a clear example of how the day to day progress is recorded, and by having explained your role and responsibilities and justified the effectiveness of this system of operation within this task. You are required to objectively reflect upon your projects outcome, detail any errors made, suggesting what could have been done better and including further recommendations and future action plans.

Task 10:
Make an evaluation on the effectiveness of your project result and critically evaluate it against your specification, planning and expectations. Use graphs, statistics, Gantt charts, sequencing, scheduling, critical path, project evaluation and review (PERT), software packages as you consider appropriate.

By providing a concise report overall that demonstrates your planning methods and procedures used, your Gantt chart is clear, detailed and complete, your PERT has been revisited (if applicable) and your targets are SMART you will have achieved this aspect.
By including within your report a Gantt or PERT chart with a key which names all of the activities (minimum 15), the timescales and identifies the projects critical path you will have shown planning and managing evidence.

Task 11:
In answering this task you are required to analyse what you could have done differently with the benefit of hindsight. Is there further work required or recommended following your project completion. Make your recommendations and justify, include here any additional considerations or ideas.
In this section, if you have demonstrated that your project has produced a positive and measurable result.  If your role is clear, your contribution is detailed and you have justified all points of your conclusion you will have met this aspect.

Task 12:
You will create and deliver a presentation covering the idea, progress, outcome and evaluation of your project. This short presentation will use the appropriate media: MS packages, paper hand-outs, etc. and be presented to an appropriate audience. Successful delivery of this presentation and the submission of the relevant documentation will meet this aspect.
