Assignment Task

Part A Review of Literature

Conduct a literature review of a sport of your choice. Examples of topics that you may like to cover are:

  • critical components required for sport e.g strength, power, speed,
  • physiological profile of elite sportspeople in that sport
  • body positions / joint angles in games
  • percentage of distance spent in different movement patterns (e.g., walking, jogging, cruising, sprinting, moving backwards, jumping etc)
  • total distance run during games
  • energy systems contributions
  • incidence of injuries
  • main types/sites of injury
  • current training loads
  • use of skill-based conditioning games
  • other relevant topics – discuss first

Must cover a minimum of 3 topics in “Review of Literature”

Part B Planning a Resistance Training Mesocycle

Using relevant information from your literature review, you are to formulate a four week mesocycle of the Resistance Training Program that would occur for the sport that you selected. The following is a guide of topics to cover:

A) Training History & Relevant Information

  • Level, age of athletes & training history
  • Objectives of the four week cycle
  • Where this four week mesocycle fits into overall program

B) S & C Program

  • Resistance training exercises (exercises, sets, reps, rest, load)
  • You can use any format to present this program – however make sure that the format you decide makes sense and can be easily interpreted

Part C Justification

Your justification is a concise outline of why you prescribed what you prescribed in your program. Appraisal of current issues in area of strength and conditioning should occur and should be supported by use of references throughout. An example:
The inclusion of the eccentric focused “Arabesque” exercise once per week is an attempt to increase the strength of the athletes’ proximal hamstring. The AFL injury report (Orchard and Seaward, 2009) highlight that the hamstrings strain is the number one injury in AFL Clubs with 6.6 new hamstring strains in 2008. The report also stated that if a player has a hamstring strain then there is a 25% reoccurrence that the strain will re-occur. Increasing eccentric hamstring strength via eccentric focused Arabesques will hopefully reduce the likelihood of the athlete suffer a hamstring strain (van der Horst, et al., 2015).
