Mara Stotzis is a 70-year-old Macedonian woman who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes two months ago and placed on metformin. As part of her initial diabetes management routine, her diabetes specialist enrolled her into diabetes education sessions at the local hospital, and she attends these once a week. The sessions are conducted by a nurse educator, Genevieve Phillips, who specialises in diabetes care. She educates clients on a variety of issues associated with diabetes management, such as diet and exercise, as well as any problems they may be having with their diabetes management routine. At a recent session, Genevieve received information from Mrs Stotzis’ specialist that she has not been adhering to her dietary requirements. He also sent across her recent blood test results, which indicated that her blood glucose level (BGL) is consistently quite high (11 mmol/L), despite the fact that she is taking blood glucose lowering medication. Genevieve realises that she must discuss this issue with Mrs Stotzis in an appropriate manner if she is to communicate therapeutically with her.
