Assignment Task :

The Health Challenges brochure: Further information and potential topics

This written assignment provides students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of normal body structure and function through researching a characteristic health condition, where homeostatic imbalance has disrupted normal function. The assessment requires students to search and access research literature to develop an information brochure on the condition, its prevalence, significance and prevention and or treatment. The academic writing is aimed to the wider community audience, not the scientific audience.

Marks allocation: Assignment worth 30% of grade (30 marks) Assignment structure: Title Information about your chosen topic to include: 1. Prevalence of condition (Australia vs world)

2. Identification of those at risk of condition or most commonly affected (These sections together will be marked out of a total of 4 marks of the 30)

3. Which systems/functions are affected? How is normal health/homeostasis affected? Characteristics symptoms of condition emphasising disruption of normal function. This is the section where you demonstrate your thorough understanding of the anatomy and physiology research you have undertaken BUT also write it in a style that supports your audience (non-science community members) to understand and use this information. You can always use the medical or scientific terms, just make sure you explain them so that the audience has a good grasp of their meaning and application to the topic. This section is where you are essentially performing the role of “translator” from research and medical science to your interested community members. This section of your report will be marked out of 10 marks of the 30 total. It is the major information based section for your brochure (evidence).

4. Identify a strategy that can help individuals or communities to prevent the health challenge developing, (improving individual health or prevent of condition). It may also include current and future research directions, if there is currently only minimally effective treatments available. So overall, this section is about ways to inform the public of the condition, OR, strategies to improve the outcomes for individuals or community OR positive future directions for research/treatment of condition. This section of your report will be marked out of 5 marks of the 30 total

5. Highlight the major potential significance of your chosen health challenge for the wider community. This is where you evaluate the prevalence of the condition, the severity of its impact (economic/social ) on the community. For example, it may be a relatively infrequent condition but it may have huge financial medical cost (eg contagious (bird flu)). In contrast it maybe very common ( large exposure (sun) ) but that prevent costs are cheaper alternative to treatment. Keep this to key points that indicate the relevance or significance of the condition to the community (why should they be interested?). This section of your report will be marked out of 5 marks of the 30 total.

The final 5 marks will be awarded on the quality of the paper in terms of its ideas, organisation and coherence, use of evidence to support your message, the writing and presentation style (including the overall quality of the spelling and grammar). REMEMBER, the target audience is the wider community, so quality isn’t simply overloading the article with heavy duty research papers. Potential topics: There is a huge potential for you to explore any health associated condition that you find interesting, whether a local issue (sharks in gold coast canals as a health risk or the quality of the water) or international (Ebola outbreak). It maybe a common condition like high blood pressure or it maybe a less recognised (or unpopular) condition like bowel cancer. What topics may I choose?

I have been asked to provide a few topics to try and give you the scope of what you may investigate. Note that you don’t have to choose a health challenge, you may choose something positive such as why exercise is good for your bones or why brushing your teeth can improve your health. Some other topics include: Breast cancer, prostate cancer, leukaemia, Melanoma, asbestosis, water quality in gold coast canals, atherosclerosis, environmental lead and human health/child health, Rubella, tetanus, whooping cough, vaccination, crop spraying and potential impact on human health, hand washing and human health, sunscreen and human health, high blood pressure, asthma, emphysema, smoking, middle ear infections, eye health in sunny climates, exercise for long life or good health, healthy diet, osteoporosis, exercise and stronger bones, stroke, transient ischaemic attacks, mental health links to physical health etc.

Students are strongly encouraged to submit the draft of the text of your brochure through turn it in prior to the final submission via the links on the course website. Please be aware that the University has explicit policies regarding the reporting of plagiarism (see course profile and GU policy library for more information). Students may submit your draft document as many times as you wish, to ensure that your written assignment does not contain significant amounts of inappropriately referenced text that matches previously published material. All students are encouraged to read and understand Griffith University policy regarding plagiarism as compliance with good referencing practice is an important graduate attribute. If you are uncertain about any issue regarding the text matching software or the report it provides to you, please contact the convenor prior to submitting your final version through the submission point. Once submitted through the submission point, you are unable to make further change to the document.
