Goethe and Wordsworth: Critical Essay Writing Assignment

Internal Code: MAS1660

Critical Essay Writing Assignment:

Task: Using Goethe and Wordsworth, critically discuss the romantic self in terms of reason, nature and freedom. Essay Instructions and Hints: 1) Primary Sources: You must use the Reader and/or the Norton edition of Notes from Underground when you reference the primary works. Do not use other editions. 2) Themes of the Unit: You need to show an awareness of the themes of this unit. Listen to the relevant lectures and/or read the lecture notes. One easy way to show awareness of the themes of the unit is to use the texts we have been reading throughout the semester to illustrate your argument. How does the text demonstrate the themes that we have been talking about in the lectures and tutorials? 3) Argument: The essay is different from the Portfolio Task in that you are being asked to ‘critically’ discuss or consider the texts. This means that now, in your essay, you must argue for a position or viewpoint, rather than just demonstrate comparative points between the texts, as was the case for your arguments in the Portfolio Task. However, it cannot be just the expression of an opinion but must be a justified judgement which follows from your argument. Your ideas must be backed up by evidence: that is, you must present a close and accurate reading of the texts. 4) Quotations: You are required to give at least three quotations per topic from the text/s with which your chosen topic is concerned.
