Assignment Task:

Assessment on Vector data, Vector Proximity, Overlay, Clipping and Query and Attribute Table analysis techniques

There are five (5) assignment questions numbered 1 to 5. Most questions have sub-questions. Each sub-question must be answered separately. The marks allocated to each question are divided between the sub-questions. You will be required to use GIS software to answer most of the assignment questions. You may use QGIS or any other software of your choice. You need to source references and cite them in-text whenever required. You can source references yourself by searching in journals and databases in the USQ Library Website, using Google Scholar or searching the Internet.

Question 1.

Create a map for an area of your interest by downloading vector data (i.e. point, line & polygon) and spot heights from the Internet (Web). Your map should contain at least one layer for each of the following data categories.

  • Point layer showing point features

  • Line layer showing linear features

  • Polygon layer showing areal features, and

  • Spot height showing elevations

Question 2.

This question is designed to test your ability to use Vector Proximity, Overlay, Clipping and Query and Attribute Table analysis techniques.

If you try to answer the question by using the measuring tool and counting the bores you will most likely get the wrong number and in any event, you will receive a low mark for not using the correct GIS approach.

The required data for the area surrounding the town of Chinchilla, Queensland, Australia is in the attached file. Please answer the following questions on the Form provided

a) How many water bores are within 20 km of the Chinchilla built-up area?

b) How many gas bores are within 20 km of the Chinchilla built-up area?

c) How many gas bores are within 500 m of a major or minor stream and within 20 km of Chinchilla built-up area?

Question 3.

This question is designed to test your understanding of the conversion of vector data to raster data. Convert each vector file into a raster file. The required data is in the attached file. Use the appropriate GIS Vector to Raster conversion methods and select suitable scales so that the converted data is legible when in raster format.

a) The point vector file should preserve the type of place (Attribute = "PLACE_TYPE”).

b) Road Line vector file should preserve the type of road (Attribute = “FTYPE”).

c) Drainage Line vector file should preserve the elevation of the drainage feature (Attribute = “ELEVATION”).

d) Cadastral data polygon vector file should preserve Tenure (Attribute = "TENURE”).

Question 4.

Identify seven key issues to be considered when sourcing GIS data from the Internet (Web). Describe how you would address each of them.

Question 5.

This is a GIS planning question and is designed to tie the different GIS processes you have studied together. You are NOT REQUIRED to download data-set or use GIS software to answer this question.  However, you are required to;  nominate a specific community, identify (only identify not obtain) spatial data sets needed, and describe the sequence of GIS operations used to reach your objective.

Background:

As a GIS consultant, you have been asked to identify a location (site) suitable for the development of a 'Public Park' for the community you have nominated. You have been asked to apply following site selection restrictions.

a) The park has to be at least 1 hectare in size.

b) The park should not be more than 5 kilometers away from the center of the populated area.

c) It should be located on public land.

d) It should be on the ground that is relatively flat (less than 3% slope).

e) It should not be in a location that is subject to flooding.

f) Public toilets should be within 500 m.

g) The park should have easy access (within 500m) to public infrastructure that includes;

  • i. roads,
  • ii. mass transit (bus or train if applicable),
  • iii. electricity,
  • iv. water supply, and
  • v. drainage.
