Unit Aims:
This unit aims to provide students with an understanding of the role of clinical leadership and management specific to the challenges faced by nurses working in various clinical environments. The unit will provide students with an overview of the impact of social, political and economic processes on the Australian Health care system. Students will also be given the opportunity to explore and evaluate the full potentials of the role of a clinical leader in specialist clinical organizations, including promoting and maintaining excellence in specialized care. It also aims to enable the student to critically examine the components of clinical leadership and management that can be applicable in Nursing and Specialisation practice.

This unit focuses on the following topics:

conceptualizing leadership; theoretical perspectives on leadership; power, authority, providing examples from contemporary practice on how nursing leadership can be the catalyst for change.

Unit Learning Outcomes:
After satisfactorily completing this unit students will have gained the ability to:
• examine the role of management and leadership skills within a Nursing and Specialisation setting;
• utilize the principles of management and leadership skills in Nursing and Specialisation settings;
• assess the qualities and behaviors that contribute to effective clinical management and leadership;
• use the knowledge to critically analyze, evaluate and reflect on the role of clinical leaders in Nursing and Specialisation settings;
• develop effective self-management and teamwork including demonstrating the potential for clinical leadership skills;
• synthesize acquired knowledge to formulate a conceptual model of clinical leadership in Nursing and Specialisations.

Task 1-
In this assignment, you are required to undertake a literature search of 4 research articles on leadership/clinical leadership. Each article will be examined thoroughly, identifying the leadership theory discussed, the issues/problems discussed, outlining the limitations and recommendations and the relevance of the research findings in terms of leadership development in nursing.


Task 2:

Task 3:
In this assignment you are required to introduce a conflict situation that occurred within your workplace and provide a critical review of the situation including the following:
• explain the event that led or resulted in the conflict situation;
• introduce the reader to your position in the institution/ward/workplace (i.e. RN, Associate Charge Nurse, Charge Nurse...)
• describe measures you applied to seek immediate resolution;
• discuss the leadership style employed in the management approach/es that you took to resolve the conflict
• discuss the outcome/s for the patient (s) and/or staff
• discuss the change/s that took place as a result to eliminate the probability for a similar event to arise, discuss the key recommendations for improving the outcomes and/or preventing a similar situation from occurring again.
