Assignment Task:

Objective
Comparison of plot and point sampling to measure stand basal area, stocking density and volume.

 Equipment

University to supply: diameter tapes, 30 m measuring tapes, clinometer, basal area prisms, point sampling ‘dendrometer’, wooden pegs, mallet, flagging tape, crayons. You to supply: your thumb, ruler, calculator, booking board, writing implements.

Methods

1. The exercise will be held in the mixed-species rainforest planting on Mr John Gough’s property, ‘Pamplemousse Park’, 95 McLeans Ridge Rd, Wollongbar.

2. In groups of four, establish a rectangular plot of about 10×10 m; in the plantation, the plot size will be determined partly by the tree spacing and you should discuss this with your lecturer. Mark the four corners of the plot with pegs and flagging tape.

3. Measure the diameter at breast height over bark (cm) and total height of each tree in your plot. It will help you if you mark measured trees with crayon as you go, to make sure none is measured twice.

4. At a convenient location near the centre of your plot, measure the stand basal area by point sampling, that is by doing a circular sweep and counting the number of trees in the sample. Each person in the group should do this using each of:

a) Their thumb.

The factor for your thumb (β), to give stand basal area in m2/ha, is given by β = 104[W/2]2/[(W/2)2+D2]

b) The supplied ‘point sampling dendrometer’, using whichever of the factors of the device you consider appropriate. Your sweeps should not count any more than about 10-15 trees.

c) A point sampling prism of appropriate factor. Your sweeps should not count any more than about 10-15 trees.

5. Decide which of the ‘point sampling dendrometer’ or the point sampling prism you prefer.

Take a single point sample for your group with this device. However, this time measure the diameter at breast height over bark and the total height of each tree which is included in the point sample.

Report

1. Determine to stand basal area from your plot measurements (item 3 above), from your three personal point samples (item 4 above) and your group point sample (item 5 above).

2. Determine stand stocking density from your plot measurements (item 3 above) and from your group point sample (item 5 above). Eq. (8.11) in your book explains how you determine stocking density from a point sample.

3. Determine stand stem wood volume from your plot measurements (item 3 above) and from your group point sample (item 5 above). Eq. (8.10) in your book explains how you determine stand stem wood volume from a point sample.

We do not have available a particular stem volume function for the trees in the stand you measured, so use the general function from Eq. (6.3) of your book, that is VU = 0.3D2H , where VU (m3) is tree stem wood volume under bark, D is diameter at breast height over bark (m) and H is tree height (m).

4. Consider all these results and compare and contrast the methods of stand measurement by plot or point samples.
