2 Case Study: Delta Logistics Delta Logistics (DL) is a family owned transport and logistics company, established in 2000 by Trevor Miller. DL started expanding rapidly in July 2016 after winning two major clients: Heinz Wattie’s and Sealord. To handle the larger volumes and ensure their clients were serviced efficiently, DL moved into a 6000sqm warehousing in November 2016. Since 2010, DL has had a team of seven staff members:

• Ngati – the accountant

• Debbie - Trevor’s assistant

• Chang - Store keeper

• and four truck drivers. Trevor was personally involved in the operations and managed the 2000sqm warehouse along with his seven employees. However, due to the increased Heinz Wattie’s and Sealord business, within a short period of 6 months, volumes started to triple and the fleet was increased to 8 trucks, with the support of outsourced labour and resources. This was at the time they moved into the new warehouse and decided to recruit people to manage the entire operations. In January 2017, things were not looking good. It was a hand to mouth operation where things were not planned, Trevor was micromanaging the entire operation. The original staff members who were with Trevor from the early days were used to this style of management and they always waited for Trevor’s confirmation without taking their own initiatives. Delivery schedules were only prepared a few days ahead of the delivery time by Trevor, and there were no contingency plans or actions in place when trucks were not operational due to mechanical breakdowns or when drivers suddenly take leave. Seasonal fluctuations were not taken into consideration due to the lack of follow up and information from clients about the time-frames. Customers mainly communicated with Trevor and he was the primary contact in the company. Ngati (50) has been working as an accountant since the inception of DL and has considerable knowledge about the accounting process of the company. But he depended on a manual entry of records, which took most of his productive time and ended up in mostly entering data rather than making effective financial decisions. Ngati prefers solitude and carefully thinks things through before he speaks. Debbie (44) was the gatekeeper to Trevor. She prepared invoices and followed up with payments, looking after the filing and record keeping for Trevor. Debbie has some background in secretarial work and has previous experience working as a human resources assistant. She is a loyal worker but takes little interest in others and their problems.
