Assessment Task Overview and Requirements

In this assignment, you will learn how to apply quantitative research skills in a real-world scenario.

The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to express your ideas and critiques about any finance topic of your interest.

If you wish to pursue a higher level of academic learning, this assignment allows you to learn how to create and develop a research paper. Particularly, if you wish to work in the banking and finance industries, this assignment can assist you in strengthening your lateral thinking and analytical skills.

PART 1: Written Research Paper

To complete the assignment, you need to do the following tasks:

1) Determine a finance topic of your interest. (Complete this task by 6 March 2020).

In week 3, you need to decide a research title for your assignment based on the research areas below. There are four areas to choose from:

  1. The relationships between cash rates and interest rates

  2. Consumer spending and its impacts on retail firms.

  3. Can lower cash rates encourage more consumer spending?

  4. The relationships between exchange rates and share market performance.

For instance, let’s say you are interested to know how Australia’s weak consumer spending would affect retail firms’ share performances in Australia. Hence, you might want to create a topic for your research project entitled “Examining the effects of weak consumer spending on share performances of the retail firms in Australia.”

Complete Draft of Individual Assignment. See Appendix 1. Explain why the chosen topic is very important to society, how your research could contribute to the literature, the methodology, the sources of data, and the expected outcomes. Please bring the draft to the class and discuss it with your lecturer.

2) Conduct a literature review. (Complete this task by 5 April 2020)

Once you receive an approval of the chosen topic from your unit coordinator, start conducting a literature review immediately.

To do this task, you need to search for relevant journal articles and reading materials from ECU library Search or Google Scholar Search. Make sure you use appropriate keywords to search for documents. For example, referring to the research example “share performances of Australia’s retail firms” above, the keywords could be “consumer spending in Australia”, “retail market” and “share market”. Or you might want to try typing the whole title into the Search engine. Do not use Wikipedia as a reliable source.
