Overview of Medical Tourism in Thailand.

With new innovations and technologies emerging, the level of health care in developed countries are rapidly improving. Many people travel outside their country of residence in search of medical treatments which are either expensive or which are not available in their own country. This process of traveling to another country for medical treatments can be defined as medical tourism (Hanefeld et al., 2013). Southeast Asian countries are some of the most popular medical tourism destinations in the world with Thailand, Malaysia, India and Singapore being some of the most popular destinations (Inayati, 2019); Thailand reports the most number of medical tourists every year compared to other Asian countries and was even recognized as one of the leading destinations for plastic surgery, providing significantly lower costs compared to Western countries (Jhonston et al., 2015).

How did Thailand become a popular Medical Tourism destination?

The medical tourism industry is rapidly expanding and improving worldwide, with Southeast Asia leading the way. After the 1997 economic crisis in Asia, most of the developing countries strategically targeted the medical tourism sector for growth and investment after the depreciation of Asian currencies (Jhonston et al., 2015).

The effects of medical tourism on the economy of Thailand:

Effects on the health care service in Thailand:
Thailand is popular around the world as a medical tourism destination because its healthcare system is advanced and affordable (Finch, 2014). However, recent increase in medical tourists have led to higher prices for medical treatments. Although, this may generate more foreign revenue for Thailand, it could undermine local patients access to quality health care (Anchana and Viroj, 2011). Most of the highly skilled physicians and
specialists are enticed to work for the private hospitals for medical tourists so they are leaving the state hospitals, consequently affecting the people who can’t afford to pay for these hospitals to receive lesser quality health-care services (Finch, 2014)
