Suspended Floors :

 

We have already discussed the fundamentals of suspended floors in Low Rise Construction/Residential  Construction including slab action and how end support conditions (i.e. pinned or fixed) and internal  supports (continuous or discontinuous?) influence design and construction. This past module note is  provided for students as a required reading material. It is highly recommended to read it before you  start to work on the current module note.  

Timber suspended floors are not discussed in this unit (refer to Low Rise Construction to learn timber  floors (non-examinable)).  

Another limitation of this module note is the exclusion of pre-stressed concrete floors. This is because  the fundamentals of pre-stressing is introduced to you only in Module 12. However, it should be  mentioned here that prestressed slab panels are more economical for long spans (typically, over 8m)  than the floor types we discuss in this module including: flat plate, flat slab and beam and slab. In  long span floors, usually deflection is the most critical criterion to determine the slab thickness. A key  focus of pre-stressing is on reducing this deflection; thus, a thinner section can be used with the aid of  pre-stressing. Also, pre-stressed floors are more water tight because they have a greater control on  reducing cracks (Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia & Standards Australia, 2011).
