Assignment Task

Scope
Building upon your work in assessment 2 you will experiment with different materials and construction techniques and produce a documentation set for a selected project. You are required to choose your own design project, from your ongoing design studio or past design studio. The selected project needs to be approved by the teaching team before you can proceed with it. You have the freedom the determine to program and the materiality of the site.
However, the materiality of the project needs to reflect a high level of response to the site conditions and modes of occupation.

The project should have at least the following details/elements:
- A fixed furniture/seating element.
- Incorporate universal access
- Accommodate a minimum of 12 people.
- Water feature/element.

The project will be carried out in the following parts:
a. Technical design brief
b. Experimentation with materials and construction techniques
c. Physical models
d. Documentation drawings, construction details and Specification
e. Presentation, portfolio, and participation

A. Technical design brief and analysis
Develop a technical design brief for the project and critically analyse it. Identify problems, constraints, or scenarios, critically evaluate, and select appropriate materials, construction techniques and construction processes or sequencing to achieve a sustainable landscape design proposition.
- Deliverable: 1-page technical design brief and analysis.

B. Design Experimentation: Materials and Construction Techniques.
The design is to incorporate a minimum of 2 primary materials: such as concrete (insitu or precast), stone, steel (stainless steel, galvanised steel, weathering steel), timber, fibreglass, glass, etc., and or other materials of your choice. You should study the site context, weather elements, soil typology, the adjacent buildings/programs (if
any), pedestrian circulation and modes of occupation of the space for clues into material selection, and materiality.
You should study the site context, weather elements, soil typology, the adjacent buildings/programs (if any), pedestrian circulation and modes of occupation of the space for clues into material selection, and materiality. You are also required to be explicit on the construction techniques and tactics relative to the program, materials choice, and design philosophy for the project. You will experiment with different materials and evaluate the design outcome before settling on the final material.
- Deliverables: Diagrams showing experimentation with a minimum of two materials and construction techniques.
