Law Case Study Assessment Task

It is 6.30pm on a Thursday night. You and your partner are the crew of Parramatta 15, the caged truck. You commenced night shift at 6.00pm and are called to the scene of a robbery at Ripoff Real Estate on a main street of Parramatta. Via the police radio you are informed that a male person has robbed the premises whilst armed with a knife. You are further informed that the male person has fled the premises in an unknown direction. Other police are patrolling to locate the offender, however, the description given is poor. You inform the police radio that you are attending the premises. As you approach the premises, you take note that the area is largely a commercial area
and that a number of businesses are still operating.
As you enter the premises, you notice that the front door of the premises is glass and is exceptionally clean except for a possible palm print. Later enquiries reveal that the windows/door were washed about 3.30pm that day. You enter what appears to be a large single room with the customer area separated from the staff area simply by desks. You observe a male sitting in a chair nursing a bandage on his left forearm. You can see blood on the bandage. Your attention is drawn to a blood stained Ripoff Real Estate business card on the floor. You see a young female wearing a Ripoff Real Estate blouse. She is crying. You see a middle aged female customer helping to pick things up off the floor. You see that the office has been ransacked. A metal four drawer filing cabinet and two chairs are lying on their sides or overturned. A waste paper bin and its contents are scattered around the room. A cash register is opened and the cash drawer is on the floor. There are various coins scattered on the floor. You notice that there is a camera mounted in the corner of the room facing the door way. You notice blood on the floor near the cash register. There is a partial shoe print in the blood.
You speak with the victim/witnesses and are told the following: a male, approximately 25 to 30 years of age; 175 - 180cms tall; clean shaven; thin build with a number two haircut all over - dark hair; with a spider web tattoo on his neck entered the premises about 6.25pm. He was wearing Nike joggers;
blue jeans and a blue COPS are TOPS tee shirt. He also had his right hand bandaged with a dirty, blood stained bandage. The blood appeared fresh. He was not wearing gloves and carried a 20 cm black handled steak knife and a red and white Coca Cola backpack.
The victims state that the offender entered the store and pulled the knife out of his back pack with his left hand. He said, "Give me all your money and no one will get hurt. The female staff member opened the cash register and the offender took out all the notes and gold coins. He then lifted the cash draw out to see if there was more cash underneath. He dropped the cash drawer on the floor.
He became enraged about the small amount of money he got and kicked and pushed over the items of furniture.
He then said Give me your wallets and mobiles. He examined each wallet and took the cash and credit cards and returned the wallets. He took a mobile phone from the male staff member. When the male staff member attempted to get his mobile phone back, he was cut on the forearm by the knife. The female staff member recalls that he was in the premises about an hour and a half earlier.

Evidence, Investigation, Police Intelligence – Case Study Assessment
He had asked about rental properties and took a business card from her. She recalled him because of the bandage.
Your partner informs you that he was approached by a witness out front who informed him that he saw a man run out of the store and throw something in a nearby footpath garbage bin. Your partner states that he looked in the bin and saw a black handled steak knife. Whilst you are at the scene, you are informed by the constable on the front counter of Parramatta Police Station that a taxi driver is in the foyer and has stated that he picked up a male matching the description of your offender near the real estate and dropped him off at Granville Railway Station. His taxi is parked in the rear yard of Parramatta Police Station. The taxi driver has complained that the male snatched $200.00 from his top pocket and ran off towards the railway without paying for his fare. When faced with the prospect of making a statement, the taxi driver has said he does not want to bother and wants to just get on and finish his shift as he will lose more money whilst waiting and you won't catch him anyway. He has been told that police wish to fingerprint and DNA test his cab and refuses.
You are the first officer off at the scene.
