Assignment Task

Assignment objectives 
You have been asked to review the performance data analysis for an ocean energy device. 
Provide background by writing a critical review of the current state of the art Oscillating Wave Surge (Pitch) Converters (OWSC). 
To process and analyse performance of the pitching cylinder device tested, in varied wave conditions. 
You must use the provided template for your report, adhere to the specified fonts, formatting, and the numbered citation. The maximum length of the entire report is 5 pages, excluding the reference list. 
As specified in the template, the report needs to be presented in a technical format that includes introduction, method, results, discussion and conclusions. 
Background and Guidance Notes 
Supporting reference material is placed on Blackboard under Assignment II and lecture material for Weeks 5 and 6 of this Unit. Please make time to browse this material and to become familiar with the renewable energy devices. 
You may copy and paste diagrams or graphical items from the reference sources as you see fit, to enhance your report, provided that you acknowledge the source. Copying extracts of other source material is acceptable provided that the references are clearly stated. 
Experiment set-up 
An oscillating cylinder of 3-kg mass was used for the experiment. The cylinder was placed in the fresh-water Model Test Basin as illustrated in Figure 1 and Figure 2.

The experiment had a total of 12 runs with varied wave height and frequency as shown in Table 1. The experimental procedure was as follows: 
1. The initial zero run data was recorded. 
2. The desired values for wave frequency and wave height were input into the system (as per Table 1). 3. The wave makers then generated the waves for approximately a minute. 
4. The generated waves caused the cylinder to oscillate back and forth (Figure 3), and the longitudinal displacement was measured via a string attached to the cylinder (as shown in Figure 1); wave profile was also recorded with the incident and phase wave probes. 
5. After the water stabilised, steps 1−4 were repeated again for the following run. 
Data processing 
The data signals were electrical and recorded in voltages. Prior to the experiment, calibration was performed to enable the conversion from voltages into mm. In the provided excel data spreadsheet, you can find an example of how the values need to be converted. 
After the values are converted, you need to estimate the maximum cylinder displacement and its frequency of oscillation for each run, and wave height and frequency measured from both probes, the wave height and frequency should be similar to those specified in Table 1. The discrepancies are due to experimental errors, which you need to discuss; hint: see lecture slides from week 2. 
For each run you will only need to consider the data segment of propagated waves when they are well- developed as shown in Figure 4 (with longer waves it may be only 3−4 waves as in Figure 4, or 6 waves with shorter waves as shown in Figure 5).
