Assignment Task:

Task:

The learning outcomes that are assessed by this coursework demonstrate:
1. A systematic understanding of the activities of industrial organisations at all points of the product life-cycle from raw material extraction to disposal and a critical awareness of current approaches to mitigating the associated environmental impacts.
2. A conceptual understanding of the energy requirements of the components of common industrial processes such as motors, pumps, heaters and compressors that will allow students to critically evaluate research methodologies and outputs from a range of related academic disciplines.
3. The qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment in tomorrow's low-carbon industries, specifically the skills of decision making in unpredictable situations and the ability to research and learn independently, required for continuing professional development.

Tasks to be undertaken:
Imagine you are a consultant specialising in industrial energy efficiency. Choose a manufacturing industry with which you are familiar and consider the different energy using processes that exist within a typical factory in this industry. For example, in the food industry you might consider cooking, mixing and refrigeration; but in the foundry industry you might consider melting, heat treatment and machining. Remember that in addition to the manufacturing processes, the facility will need to provide a comfortable working environment for the staff, so you may need to consider extraction and air conditioning.

1. Choose one type of product made in your chosen industry (such as a personal computer, if you are considering the electronics industry) and identify the three most significant energy using processes involved in its manufacture, stating typical energy consumed for each unit manufactured. Use suitable units such as kWh per kg of material processed, or kWh per vehicle if considering a car factory.
2. Using a Sankey diagram that illustrate the main flows of energy into, within and out of the factory, show the main energy conversions that take place, indicating typical efficiencies, such as chemical energy to thermal energy. Where would you expect the main energy losses to be?
3. Comment on the suitability of renewable energy technologies for this facility, explaining why the features of the technology you have chosen make it especially suitable for this product and its manufacturing processes. This will require careful reading of the lessons used in this module as well as library research. You may find it helpful to read case studies from your chosen industry.
