Question 1 – The Heart of Redness Essay

When Camagu and Qukezwa are debating whether the casino development will benefit the village of Qolorha-by-Sea, he demands to know why she is “against progress”. Qukezwa “laughs for a long time” and later replies:

“Vathiswa says they made you a doctor in the land of the white man after you finished all the knowledge in the world. But you are so dumb. White man’s education has made you stupid. This whole sea will belong to tourists and their boats and their water sports. Those women will no longer harvest the sea for their own food and to sell at the Blue Flamingo. Water sports will take over our sea!”

“There will be compensation for that.” [Camagu argues.] “The villagers will get jobs at the casino.” “To do what? What do villagers know about working in casinos? What education do they have to do that kind of work? I heard one foolish Unbeliever say men will get jobs working in the garden. How many men? And what do they know about keeping those kinds of gardens? What do women know about using machines that clean? Well, maybe three or four women from the village may be taught to use them.

Three or four women will get jobs. As for the rest of the workers, the owners of the gambling city will come with their own people who are experienced in that kind of work.”

Using the above extract from Chapter 5 of Mda’s The Heart of Redness novel as a starting point, write an essay (1500 – 2000 words) in which you critically argue whether or not “progress”, as it manifests in The Heart of Redness, is inherently good for people and the places in which they live, and why.

To support your argument, refer directly to relevant scenes, characters, settings and themes from The Heart of Redness, as well as the key relationships between place, space, identity and power as they relate the concept of “progress”, both within the novel and in general. In addition, refer to at least three other credible secondary sources as part of your substantiation. Remember to accurately reference all sources using the Harvard method, both in-text and in a reference list.

Question 2 – Portrait with Keys Creative Piece and Critical Reflection

When choosing this option, please respond to Q.2.1 and Q.2.2.

Q.2.1 Vignette 61

On the eve of the millennium, South Africa’s new police commissioner, Jackie Selebi, entered the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria to make an inspection. According to subsequent news reports, the commissioner was not impressed with what he found. Incensed by the casual attitude of the charge-office staff and their failure to recognize him, he called Sergeant Jeanette Mothiba a ‘****ing gorilla’. Sergeant Mothiba responded by laying a charge of crimen injuria against the commissioner.

The incident was widely reported. Some treated it as a joke or at worst a blunder. Others felt that the commissioner’s language was not just inappropriate, but unforgivably derogatory and racist. It was echo of the insulting ‘baboon’ used so often by white racists against black people, and all the more shocking in this instance because a prominent and powerful black man had used it against a black woman under his authority. One black female journalist wrote that the phrase conjured up the image of a gorilla mask of the kind worn at fancy-dress parties, superimposed on a black woman’s face. The image would linger, she said, and be used against other black women.
