Objective 1 

Identify a suitable finite element mesh by which you would use to perform the structural analysis of the bridge, within the limit of 1000 nodes ascribed by Abaqus Student Edition. 

This can be attempted by performing a convergence study by sequentially increasing the number of elements that are used to discretise the bridge. You can either increase the number of elements discretising the edges of each section member or reducing the size of the elements in each member when assigning “seeds” prior to meshing. 

At this stage, it is sufficient to arbitrarily choose any section in Appendix A for the convergence study. Note also that the rounded corners in Appendix A will be disregarded in this analysis and you can treat each section as a hollow square. 

You can monitor the displacement at the middle of the bridge with increasing number of elements and once you have identified the mesh to be used for the analysis, provide a justification why you adopt the mesh. 

Further information for your analysis are as follows: 

1. Element type: Use beam with cubic formulation

2. Loads: 

a. Gravity (Assign a gravity load to the entire model with acceleration −9.81mm/ss2 in the negative y-direction in Abaqus) b. Line load (Assign a line load ww = 10000 NN/mm as shown in Figure 1 in your finite element model)

 

3. Material properties: 

a. Density of steel 8050 kkkk/mm3 b. Young’s modulus of steel 200 GGGGGG c. Poisson’s ratio of steel νν = 0.3 

 

Your report should elaborate and discuss on 

1. The methodology by which you adopted to perform the convergence study (NOT how you use Abaqus)

2. Evidence/analysis/justification by which you arrive at the mesh you will use for the analysis Objective 2 

Identify a suitable SHS section for the footbridge subject to design conditions. 

In this task, you will use the mesh you have identified in Objective 1 and perform finite element analyses for the different SHS sections in Appendix A to identify the optimal section to be used for the footbridge design. 

Your SHS section must satisfy the design criteria that the stress experienced by the footbridge must not exceed 111111 MMMMMM at any point on the footbridge. Also, the vertical deflection
