Subject Code : ENG8208
Country : Australia
Assignment Task:

Task:

This assignment meets the following course objectives:
1. Know and understand the project management life cycle and the knowledge areas of project management.
2. Demonstrate understanding of and assess the managerial and organisational environment and context in which a project is to be delivered.
3. Apply the project management process to the delivery of an engineering project.
4. Evaluate the effectiveness of the application of the project management process to the delivery of project outcomes.

Question 1 (a) – Project 1 (15 marks)
You are managing a project that is scheduled to take 24 months to complete from its commencement and has a Budget at Completion (BAC) of $5,000,000.
At the Status Date, the project has the following characteristics:
Planned value (PV) $1,200,000
Actual cost (AC) $1,050,000
Percentage of work completed 27%
Calculate the following quantities:
Earned Value (EV) (2 marks)
Cost Variance (CV) (2 marks)
Schedule Variance (SV) (2 marks)
Cost performance index (CPI) (2 marks)
Schedule performance index (SPI) (2 marks)
Using your results, apply the following three (3) formulae to the calculation of the Estimate at Completion (EAC) of the project, explaining when each formula would be used.

  •  EAC=BAC/CPI
  •  EAC=AC + (BAC – EV)
  •  EAC= AC + [(BAC-EV) / (CPI x SPI)].

Question 1 (b) – Project 2 (15 marks)
You are managing a second project that has the same time and cost specifications as those in Question 1 (a), but which is 36% complete at the Status Date, when Actual Costs are $2,000,000.
Its specifications are below
Budget at Completion (BAC): $5,000,000
Schedule time to complete: 24 months.
At the Status Date, the project has the following characteristics:
Planned value (PV) $1,800,000

Actual cost (AC) $2,000,000
Percentage of work completed 36%
Calculate the following quantities:
Earned Value (EV) (2 marks)
Cost Variance (CV) (2 marks)
Schedule Variance (SV) (2 marks)
Cost performance index (CPI) (2 marks)
Schedule performance index (SPI) (2 marks)
Using your results, apply the following three (3) formulae to the calculation of the Estimate at Completion (EAC) of the project, explaining when each formula would be used.

  •  EAC=BAC/CPI
  •  EAC=AC + (BAC – EV)
  •  EAC= AC + [(BAC-EV) / (CPI x SPI)].

Question 1 (c) – Project Comparison (up to 500 words
Compare the two projects from the point view of project performance, paying particular attention to the following:

  • Cost Variance (CV) (3 marks)
  • Schedule Variance (SV) (3 marks)
  • Cost performance index (CPI) (3 marks)
  • Schedule performance index (SPI) (3 marks)
  • Estimated Actual Cost (EAC) of the project (3 marks)
  • Compare and contrast your results for each project. As well as an analysis of the above parameters, you should consider an assessment of the overall project performance for each project, using a measure like CPI (To Complete Performance Index) to support your discussion,
