Assignment Task

1. Project Outline
‘Self Sufficient Lodge’ is an eco-friendly country lodge located on the Great Dividing Range north of the city of Toowoomba, where the owners Jura and Ima Green host immersion programs designed to teach their guests modern design principles for building sustainable housing and living a zero–impact lifestyle. The existing solar power generation system at the lodge is reaching the end of its life and the owners are looking to replace it with a new micro-hydro system, as outlined below.

1.1. The Proposed Micro-Hydro System
The objective is to generate and store electrical energy in the most efficient manner and in the most cost effective way. This is expected to be achieved by damming a creek to form a holding pond in which water will accumulate. Periodically a controllable flow rate of water is to be directed through a pipe to the turbine to generate electrical energy which is used to charge a bank of batteries. The energy stored in those batteries can then be used at any time to operate electrical devices on the
property.
It is proposed that the micro-hydro system be comprised of the following equipment:
- A concrete dam constructed across a valley where a creek currently flows
- Pipe work and nozzle to bring water to the turbine
- A Pelton Wheel turbine (not part of this assessment)
- An electrical generator (not part of this assessment)
- Battery Storage (not part of this assessment)
- Filter, enclosures and ancillary fittings (not part of this assessment)

2. Project Design Sections
The project will be divided into five design sections including a costing, to ensure that the requirements of the project are clear. Each section of the design is defined by the set of design parameters, listed in bold. Any company submitting a design proposal must use the given variable names (letters) for these parameters. Each design section requires a technical analysis which must be summarised in the final design proposal. The section numbers are:
1. Dam location and volume
2. Penstock (pressure pipe) and flow rate
3. Turbine and generator selection (not part of this assessment)
4. Battery selection (not part of this assessment)
5. Project costing (not part of this assessment)
