Assignment Task:

I. You are to investigate the importance of latching and interlocking for a certain PLC application using different programming blocks. [80 marks]
In the application shown below, PLC is used to control the system as follows:

  • (NO) UP PB is used to turn the motor in the forward direction to open the door.
  • (NO) Upper Limit Switch is used to detect that the door reached the end of the track while opening and thus stop.
  • (NO) UP PB is used to turn the motor in the reverse direction to close the door.
  • (NO) Lower Limit Switch is used to detect that the door reached the floor while closing and thus stop.
  • (NC) stop push-button is used to manually switch off the motor.

A. Create the system assignment list by completing the table below.

B. List the ON requirement(s) for the system output(s).

C. Write the Boolean expression for the system output(s).

D. Design a LAD to implement the above conditions. Write all the input and output names using the names you have assigned in Parts A. Use simple logic blocks to perform latching.
E. Create the FAB of the system for the LAD that you have created in Part D. Use simple logic blocks to perform latching

F. Modify the program to create interlocking so the running motor can’t reverse direction unless it is stopped first.

G. Modify the LAD of the system to improve the process by adding the following feature:
• As long as the door is opening, a message will appear saying “Up”, and as long as the door is closing, a message will appear saying “Down”.
II. You are to investigate sequential control using PLC.
Two motors are to be controlled in a sequence as follows:
• When (NO) SART push button is pressed Motor 1 starts running and continue running after the PB is released.
• After 10 seconds Motor 2 starts running.
• The two motor continues running until (NC) STOP pushbutton is pressed.
Design a LAD or an FBD to implement the above conditions. Name all inputs and outputs correctly.
