Assignment Task

Aims
You must complete the following exercises on Altium Designer:
1. draw and simulate the circuit behaviour of the provided op-amp configurations.
2. map a simple low-pass filter circuit to a PCB design.
3. (HD stage) map the full tone control circuit to a PCB design.

Expected Learning Outcomes
After completing this experiment, students should be able to:
1. navigate and effectively operate the Altium Designer user interface;
2. draw circuits consisting of components available from the parts library using the Altium Designer schematic editor;
3. perform time domain simulations to obtain behavioural description on circuit;
4. perform basic trouble shooting and diagnostics to allow accurate circuit modelling using the provided circuit simulator;
5. compare outputs of circuit simulators with theoretical expectation;
6. interpret the simulation results and the difference with performed theoretical analytical.

Background
Modern electronic engineering design makes extensive use of a number of different software packages to develop new products. The level of complexity for all but the simplest circuits means manual analysis techniques are infeasible and automation tools are crucial. Historically, many pieces of specialist software were developed for particular purposes, e.g. circuit schematic editor to draw circuit diagrams, simulators to compute the waveforms at different parts of a circuit, graphical displays to plot these waveforms to screen or printer . . . etc. In recent times, these tools have been integrated together to form complete electronic design automation (EDA) environment, and Altium Designer is one example that is widely used in industry. It is currently used as the primary EDA package for the undergraduate degree programs in the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
One of the most useful and widely used building block in electronic instrumentation is the operational amplifier (or commonly referred to as op-amp). It has gradually evolved from the historical vacuum tube devices, to those using discrete transistors, and now to the small integrated circuit devices. Op¬amps can amplify DC as well as AC signals. In electronic circuit diagrams, a triangular symbol is used to denote an op-amp, as illustrated in Figure 1. Note that power supply and other physical connections are sometimes deleted from schematic diagrams for simplicity. An ideal Op-amp has infinite input impedance, infinite voltage gain, zero output impedance, and infinite bandwidth. It can be configured as a perfect differential amplifier, which has an output that is proportional to the difference between the two inputs. There are a number of implementations of op-amps, the most famous one is the bipolar technology based version and commonly referred to as LM741/NE741/uA741 op-amp. This is an inexpensive integrated op-amp that is readily available and has good all-round characteristics: it has high open-gain, moderately high input impedance, low output impedance, and low noise.
