Introduction and Purpose of Task

Enzymes are protein molecules that catalyse the chemical reactions which take place within cells. Catalysts speed up chemical reactions by bringing the reactants together for the reaction to occur. Enzymes are capable of carrying out thousands of reactions every second. Hydrogen peroxide is a toxic substance in cells because it reacts with other molecules and disrupts cell activities.

A very common enzyme in both animals and plants is catalase, which speeds up the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide.

The rate of this reaction can be estimated by the speed at which bubbles of oxygen are produced. Enzymes are very sensitive to changes in temperature along with other characteristics such as pH and chemical inhibitors. Enzymes can be denatured or inactivated when the conditions are not optimal, this is due to their three-dimensional shape being altered or blocked in some way depending on the conditions.

Aim

To investigate the effect of changes in temperature of a solution of hydrogen peroxide on the activity of the enzyme catalase.
