PART 1 – UNIT OF WORK (1500 words)Design a unit of work that demonstrates your professional development towards AITSL Standards 1.4 and 2.4. To do this you will create an annotated unit of work* comprising approximately four to six lessons (in at least one Key Learning Area [KLA]) that includes:a) Indigenous perspectives reflecting the knowledge and understanding of, and respect for, Indigenous Australian histories, cultures and languages that you have established and/or built on in this subject. The unit of work you design should recognise the similarities and/or diversities of one or more of the following: local Indigenous knowledge and knowledge sources, spirituality, beliefs and values, concepts of kinship and culturally sensitive issues.b) pedagogical strategies that cater to the identities, strengths and needs of Indigenous learners (including, where relevant, specific literacy, numeracy, STEM and English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) strategies).c) opportunities for consultation with, and participation of, local Indigenous community representatives and/or personnel across the development/planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Unit of Work. There should be clear evidence of your willingness to establish respectful relationships among educators, students and the local Indigenous community.

PART 1 - Unit of Work requirementsBefore you present the outline of your Unit of Work, please include a brief overview of aspects of your planning such as:Identify a school from the Professional Experience that you have been on or will go on, OR, a school/ local Indigenous community context that you are familiar with or would like to research**.The stage or Year level of the students you will be planning for eg. Stage 3 or Year 6Learning outcomes/Content areas (NESA) or Content Descriptions/Elaborations (Australian Curriculum) or equivalent from other relevant State syllabusLinks to relevant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures Cross curriculum priority – Organising Idea/s (ACARA, 2014)Relevant Australian Professional Teaching Standards addressed (AITSL, 2017)NB. This overview will not be included in the word count as it is expected that you will copy and paste content from relevant curriculum and policy documents. Please provide an in-text citation to curriculum/syllabus documents.At the end of your assessment, provide an Appendix that lists resources and personnel (agencies/organisations) referred to in your Unit of Work (i.e. URLs of local government websites, land council websites, websites or places to be visited by students, online resources, local newspaper articles, references and links where available to hard-copy texts resources such as picture books or novels). NB. An Appendix is not included in the word count.* An example of an annotated lesson and a template for the assessment will be available in the Resources folder on the EEB435/505 Interact2 site.** It is intended that you will plan your unit of work with a school/community context in mind and conduct your own independent research to learn more about the school and local Indigenous community context for this assessment. However, please do not cold-call schools or Indigenous community agencies and/or organisations to conduct research. If you are not well-known to or involved with the school or local community organisations, use of websites and other publicly available information should be used to research information about Indigenous personnel/education staffing and Indigenous education policies, programs and practices at your selected school and Indigenous community organisations that could be consulted and/or be involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Unit of Work.

 

PART 2 – PROFESSIONAL REFLECTION (1500 words)Write a 1500 word professional reflection on the main ideas that have been presented in the subject materials relating to:a) effective engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and what influence these main ideas have had, or will have, on your professional practice; and,b) what it means to be a culturally competent educator and what influence these main ideas have had, or will have, on your professional practice.This reflection piece is about your development as an educator and what you have learned in this subject and how this learning will influence you in your profession as a teacher. First person voice should be used and references to the subject materials, and wider reading where relevant, must be included.You are required to undertake independent research beyond the required readings for this task. The independent desktop research will be used to inform a critical and in-depth Professional reflection that articulates scholarship relating to the main ideas presented in the subject.Overall task requirementsYou must include in the body of your assignment, and in an overall References list, a minimum of 8 scholarly/academic sources from the EEB435/505 required reading list. Please use headings to clearly distinguish the different parts of your assignment.
