This section should not be based on opinion; save your viewpoint and argument for the final sections. In this section, you are setting the scene.

In this section: Describe your artefact. Explain what it tells us or indicates about the issue or theme. You may need to say something about where it is situated; for instance, if it is a news article, what is its source? The Herald Sun or The Australian newspapers, for instance, tend to be more conservative than The Guardian, ABC News or The Sydney Morning Herald. Decide what your artefact’s context tells us about it and whether this detail is important. Then, draw on the sociological literature to explore the issue. You may choose to establish a series of ‘sub-questions’ to explore aspects of the debate. These sub-questions can be used as sub-headings to organise the analysis. You may choose to explain what the artefact tells us andfails to tell us about the issue. You may use this section to highlightwhat more we need to know about this topic. You must draw on a combination of literature from this topic with additional sources – some of this literature will have been used in the literature review, some will be newly introduced here; aim not to use the same direct quotes in this section as you may have used in your literature review – the literature review sets the scene, this section allows you to go deeper. Look at your additional readings and hot topic articles to locate additional sources. Also, speak to your tutor about any literature they may have. Your analysis should expand our knowledge of the issue and help you to form an argument; in other words, an informed standpoint on the area you are investigating. By the end of this section, restate your main research question and present your argument.
