The objective of this lab is learning about propagation of waves in transmission lines and learning to design matching networks for them. The lab should be done using MATLAB.
I. Circuit configuration
Configuration of the transmission line circuit for this lab is shown below.
II. Wave propagation in transmission lines
In this section, we study the partially standing waves over the transmission line. Assume that VS = 1 sin(2π × 300 × 106 t) [V].
1- Calculate and plot the voltage and current distribution over the transmission line at t=0, t=T/4, and t=T/2, where T is the oscillation period of the source.
2- Calculate and plot the voltage and current at the middle of the transmission line versus time from t=0 to t=2T.
3- Calculate the reflection coefficient of the load and the standing wave ratio over the transmission line.
III. Matching Circuit
In this section, we want to design a single-reactance matching network to match the load impedance (RLC part) to the transmission line at f=300 MHz.
1- Design a matching network with a series reactance. You should determine the minimum required length of the transmission line section (lS) and the exact element that should be used to get the reactance.
2- Design a matching network with a parallel reactance. You should determine the minimum required length of the transmission line section (lP) and the exact element that should be used to get the reactance.
3- For each of the series and parallel matching configurations, calculate and plot the reflection coefficient magnitude versus frequency from 50 MHz to 1 GHz.
