Assignment Task:

Title of rapid review

A summary of the effectiveness of compression stockings for prevention of Deep Vein Thrombosis and Post- Thrombotic syndrome in hospitalised patients: a rapid review of systematic reviews.

Executive summary

Background: DVT is one of the major leading cause of morbidity and preventable mortality around the world. Study says that one out of 20 people develop DVT once in their lifetime... in United States, around 200000-400000 people develop DVT, every year. The development of single or multiple blood clots in the deep veins of the affected extremities or pelvis where mostly there is inflammation of the vessel wall is known as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is the chronic complication of DVT which occurs to one third of people who are diagnosed with DVT. Post- thrombotic syndrome is caused due to venous insufficiency after deep vein thrombosis. Compression stockings is still the cornerstone for the effective prevention and management of DVT and post-thrombotic syndrome. Compression stockings or graduated compression stockings (GCS) is the cornerstone for effective non-pharmacological intervention for prevention of DVT and post-thrombotic syndrome.

Objectives:

The objective of this review was to identify, explore and evaluate the effectiveness of compression stockings to prevent the Deep Vein Thrombosis and Post-thrombotic syndrome among hospitalised patients using data from systematic reviews.

Inclusion criteria:

Types of participants:

Patients of both sex (male and female) and any age hospitalised for various condition including surgical procedures, medical condition and patient who were at high risk of DVT, post DVT and Post-thrombotic syndrome were included.

Types of intervention(s):

The strategic intervention ‘compression stockings’ to prevent DVT and Post-thrombotic syndrome was considered for this review. Studies that identified the effectiveness of compression stockings in preventing DVT and post-thrombotic syndrome was thoroughly reviewed.

Types of studies:

The current review considered any systematic review that evaluated the effectiveness of compression stockings to prevent DVT and Post-thrombotic syndrome in hospitalized patients.

Outcomes:

The main outcome was the incidence of DVT and post-thrombotic syndrome and the effectiveness of compression stockings. The other secondary outcome was complication and side effects due to incorrect use of graduated compression stockings.
