Assignment Task:

Title: How does domestic violence impact on children emotional development?

Abstract:

Children from domestic violence home are significantly disempowered group. It impact on the children emotional development which relatively limit their verbal skills and emotional literacy (Thornton, 2014).  Wide range of research has found that witnessing violence to their mothers can have a detrimental impact on children, tantamount to emotional abuse or psychological maltreatment (Hester et, al 2007). Similarly, some experts are of the option that it essential to find out the exact experience of each child in order to gain some understanding of the possible impact of these experiences. This edge into the systematic review aims to provide further knowledge into the above issues. The review adopts the perspectives and experience of professionals, public commentators and authors to explore the topic. The themes discovered will assist social establishments, government and practitioners to get involved with children and families in effective manners.

Background:

Domestic violence remind wide-spread in the Uk, accounting for 14 per cent of all violence crime (office for National Statistic, 2013).Domestic violence is a significant and weighty matter for social work in terms of how it impacts those who experience and witness it. It requires response from the criminal justice system and the social health agencies resulting in substantial costs that the wider society must bear.

While it is not a new phenomenon, public awareness on domestic violence has increased over the past three decades resulting in a growing political agreement that definitive actions need to be taken to combat this social menace (Holt & Devaney, 2015). Domestic violence definition has been adopted across government departments in England as “Any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial, or emotional) between adults who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality”( Home Office, 2006 cited in Hester et al, 2007).

The impacts of domestic abuse waves through the entire family, it does not impact on the victim only but to the children who witness it. Therefore, It is important to enquire what each child has experienced in order to understand the possible effect of these experiences.( Thornton 2014)

These experiences may include any of the following behaviour, physical, emotional and psychological effect which may be for long and short term. (Hester et al, 2007). Such children are known to experience delays in psychological and emotional development characterised by anxiety disorder, extreme aggressiveness, and internalising and externalising behaviour problem (Thornton 2014).  When looking at the impact on children, it is imperative to approach domestic violence as real and it is being experienced by children that are developing emotionally. Evidence has shown that children who are exposed to adult violence can suffer adverse consequences (Rivett et, al. 2006; Stanley 2011 cited in Thornton)

There is also a great awareness that children form domestic violence homes have difficulty in the area of emotional expression and regulation. The emotional expression in children of battered women is considerably more negative than children from non-battered women. They are associated with sadness, depression, worry, anger and frustration than their mates. Their ability to regulate emotion is less developed (Fainsilber et,al. 2006)

Aims and Objectives
