Module Description
This module is aimed at helping students develop enhanced counselling skills with an emphasis on extending their understanding of the helping relationship and the helping process, through instruction and demonstration of more sophisticated counselling skills. It will begin with a revision of the Relational Skills Model and an overview of the skills developed in the Introduction to Basic Counselling Skills module, as these are foundational to developing enhanced counselling skills. At the heart of this module is the importance of the values of helping with a distinct focus on empathic engagement. To this end, this module will continually invite students to participate in self-reflective activities to assist students to explore the role of their values in the helping process. Furthermore, it will not only provide instructional material on the various
underpinnings of a helping relationship but also integrate this with multiple opportunities for students to practice their skill through classroom activities. The student will be introduced to the later stages of the Relational Skills Model, in which they are introduced to enhanced skills, intuitive and learned skills and embedded skills.

 

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to:

  • Contextualise enhanced counselling skills within the Relational Skills Model, by reviewing core micro-skills;
  • Provide an overview of the remaining stages (Stages 3 – 5) of the Relational Skills Model (Working on the Relationship, the Established Relationship, Maintaining and Ending the Relationship);
  • Understand the contributions of Egan’s Model in working with problem management or opportunity development;
  • Development of an ethical and self-reflective stance in the helping relationship;
  • Demonstrate their ability to engage in self-reflection around values that are embedded in the helping relationship and effectiveness of their use of the enhanced micro-skills, intuitive and learned micro-skills and embedded micro-skills; and
  • Apply a range of key micro-skills, such as enhanced skills (challenging, self-disclosure, immediacy, use of silence, clarifying, reassessing, probing and giving feedback), intuitive and learned skills (deeper empathy, focusing, use of metaphors, drawing together themes, clarifying and developing goals and action planning) and embedded skills (implementing change, termination and referrals).
