Assignment Task:

My mentor contacted me through my university email by introducing themselves as a fourth-year medical imaging student. I immediately felt comfort through the new connection with my mentor by understanding that they had recently been in my position. Their ability to sympathise with me as a first-year medical imaging student proved highly beneficial as they were able to answer my questions in a personal, informative manner. For example, I asked my mentor to “give me a brief rundown of what each year might look like” throughout the degree. They replied with some small paragraphs describing the workload and the placement of each year. What was particularly of relevance for me was their description of their first year; being one of high difficulty and frustration. This resonated with me as these were some of the feelings that I had been experiencing, along with feeling like I was the only one in my position. Hearing that my mentor had gone through what I was going through at the time comforted me and ensured me that if they could reach fourth year, then I could too. (back up with quote about looking up to those who have experienced where you currently are). I’ve learnt from this experience that even asking a simple question to an individual who has walked the same path as myself can largely change my perspective.

My mentor offered to meet me in person but COVID 19 prevented it. This negatively impacted me as I prefer to engage in verbal communication over written communication. To counter this however, my mentor added a great amount of detail in their written questions and responses. I appreciated their high attention to detail as I was not left asking questions or feeling confused. (writing with detail quote). I can now appreciate the importance of using detail in my written communication so that the reader can have clarification and not feel confused. This will be important to remember when I am a fourth-year mentor contacting my first-year mentee.

My mentor applied a great amount of effort in creating their induction program. This was evident through their high level of detail and appropriate use of language. They used some medical language but nothing that was too hard for me to understand or learn. After reading it, I felt clarified and did not need to ask any subsequent questions. I suspect that being informative but simple were some of their focusses as the program was easy to read and made sense. (quote about the importance of simplicity).

When I am a fourth-year medical imaging student, I will be reflecting some of the qualities that my mentor showed me.
They showed great organisation in being prompt to introduce themselves to me near the start of the second study period. This allowed me to have someone to call on in times of doubt or struggle. I felt comforted knowing that I had someone who could answer any of my queries from a student point of view.
My mentor was informative in their induction program whilst writing in a personal style. This helped me to understand.
