Assignment Task

Objectives of these activities:
There are numerous research centres and groups around the world currently using  bionanotechnology to achieve breakthroughs in healthcare, environmental monitoring, food production and in agriculture. Their research covers numerous fields such as targeted drug and gene delivery, regenerative medicine, therapeutics and diagnostics, via both in vivo and  in vitro methods, along with biosensors, medical imaging and biomedical devices that interface  with living tissues. By examining the set topic question for the literature review and delivering  a critical appraisal of one research paper (details appear below), you will gain an  understanding of different types of nanoparticles, and of the complex interactions that arise  between them and living systems. By reading, writing and critically appraising this topic you  will also gain an understanding of the developments and discoveries in this field, and an insight  into the profiles of various research teams. This is useful for possible future contacts and work  connections. It is also imperative that you are cognisant of new developments in the  Bionanotechnology field and are capable of navigating through the huge body of information  that is available via the internet.

TASK 2: Instructions for the Written Literature Review and Progress Components (45%):
• Completed written literature review, submitted to Turn-it-in, by no later than 10:00pm  Friday, 23rd October, 2020
• 2500 words maximum in ‘Calibri’ or ‘Arial’ font (size 12 and 1.5 line spacing) • A penalty will be applied to late submissions (10% will be deducted from the final mark  of this component, for every 24 hours it is late)
• Checkpoint deadlines for Progress Tasks:
o Selection of topic area (28th August)
o Summary list of 10 articles (4th September)
o Literature review skeleton (25th September)
This assignment is a writing review and reading-techniques exercise designed to familiarise  you with the current literature in the field of Bionanotechnology. Using recent literature (published within last 7-8 years) discuss the medical application of nanoparticles (<100nm)  used in the treatment or diagnosis of disease associated with the human respiratory system.  In your review focus on the role of the protein corona and particle characteristics (eg. size and  shape) that influence the particle targeting, localisation and cellular effects. You should also  include some examples of the advantages this technology has over current treatments or  diagnostics.
The critical literature review (2500 word limit) should be written in the style of a report for  presentation to scientific colleagues. The review should provide an introductory overview of  the selected topic, that logically leads to a critical appraisal of the current literature. All  information included in the report must be referenced appropriately using Harvard style or  other acceptable scientific referencing style. It is important that all points are written in the  student’s own words (paraphrased) and are supported with correct citations. All documents  for this assessment will be submitted to Turn-it-in to check for plagiarism.
Use of websites should be kept to a minimum and are not included in the reference count  which should be a minimum of 20 research papers (not including review articles). References  older than 10 years should only be used on rare occasions when they are the primary source  (e.g. “this nanoparticle was first created by author, 1985”). The reference list should start on a  new page at the end of the literature review. Students’ will also need to fill in and insert the  cover page provided on UTSonline for their literature review.
To help student’s construct their literature review, there will be multiple checkpoints and  deadlines throughout semester. These checkpoints include:
1. Selection of nanoparticle topic. Due: 28th August, 2020 – these are to be uploaded on  UTSOnline. Once chosen, topics cannot be changed unless approved by the  coordinator.
2. A list of 10 research articles directly related to the selected topic. Due: 4th September  (uploaded to UTSOnline).
3. A skeleton of the literature review. Due: 10:00 pm Friday, 25th September, submitted  via UTSOnline. This includes the main subheadings for each section. There will need to  be a paragraph (75 – 100 words each) outlining each section. The relevant research  articles / references to be used in each section should also be included.
During each of the scheduled Friday workshop presentation sessions, there will time allocated  for one-on-one discussion and feedback on progress in the research and writing of the  literature review.
Professional skills and their  appropriate application: Understanding of plagiarism,  correct referencing style  applied (10%)
- Inclusive of a definition of the topic
- Provides a broad introduction of the topic at the start of the review
- Correctly addressed the set question and requirements of the task
- Demonstrates synthesis and critical analysis of the information presented
- Developed a discussion/argument with final conclusive remarks
- The material presented goes beyond simply listing relevant information but rather develops a coherent  overall story showing the relevance of the work presented/reviewed. Places this information into a broader  context covering the field of Bionanotechnology. Critical appraises the information and draws conclusions  supported by evidence from the literature. Comes to a logical conclusion based upon the information  presented
- Included detailed research of at least 20 research papers (not including review articles)
- The review was written in a coherent and clear manner, free from grammatical and spelling errors - There was a logical flow to the review with a clear introduction and supporting evidence to develop  ideas/discussion/argument of the work presented
- Final concluding remarks/summary/overview provided
