Assignment Task:

1. Concept and definition

a. Choose one of the following concepts:
Identity, Belonging, Welcome to/Acknowledgement of Country; Colonisation; Deficit Thinking; Stereotypes; Representation; High Expectations; Land/Place-Based Learning; Respect; Cultural Appropriation; Community; Collaboration; Country; Respect).

b. State and define your concept, drawing upon one academic reference here.
The definition you provide must be primarily in your own words (short quotations of approx. 25 words each are acceptable), but supported by research gathered from one reference here which should be textbooks, book chapters, or scholarly articles.

2. Personal Background

Here you must discuss how your personal background (i.e. cultural/ethnic background; gender, etc.) and experiences (i.e. school; work; community; travel) may have informed your response to your concept and 1599EDN course content. For example, what advantages and/or limitations of awareness might you have about these issues as a result of your social background? What advantages and/or limitations of awareness might you have as a result of your personal experience (i.e. your awareness of history or issues related to Indigenous peoples before this course; your awareness of Indigenous scholars, artists, political figures; your understanding of Indigenous Knowledge)?  This could mean relating it to personal experience, to something you have read about and how it made you feel (for example, Anna’s story in Harrison & Sellwood), or to the experience of a family member or friend. You do not need to share any personal/sensitive information you feel uncomfortable sharing but must speak about the course content and concept’s relevance and influence to you in your life. For example, you could speak about what you did or did not learn about these issues in school (How was it presented? How did it make you feel? If you did not learn about these issues, how does it make you feel learning or reading about these issues now? Does/did anything surprise you?).  Another option would be to speak about something you have read in the paper or seen on a movie or TV in relation to these issues (How did reading/viewing/listening about this make you feel? What were other people’s reactions to the issue? How might you have reacted to reading about this issue before taking the class? How do you react to this now? Is there any difference?). Must include the reference to one new or recommended piece of literature. This should be textbooks, book chapters, or scholarly articles.

3. Understanding of concept through reference to some of the events depicted in ONE of the Hidden Histories Posters

You will critically reflect upon how your selected concept relates back to the social and historical context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples depicted within your selected poster, using relevant literature to support your argument.   You do not have to discuss all of the events illustrated on your poster, but only the events most relevant to your selected concept. Your discussion must be primarily in your own words (short quotations of approx. 25 words each are acceptable), but supported by research gathered from one reference here.  This should be textbooks, book chapters, or scholarly articles.

4. Understanding of concept through reference to one example and/or event about Indigenous peoples internationally

State and describe your example and/or event, drawing upon one new academic reference here.  You must summarise the context of the event/example (i.e. where/when it occurred; what Indigenous group was involved) and then explain how this particular example and/or event relates to your selected concept.  The example/event you provide must be primarily in your own words (short quotations of approx. 25 words each are acceptable), but supported by research gathered from one new reference here.
