Assignment Task:

Question 1

Use the information in the dataset women20.sav to answer the following questions. You should use SPSS to calculate the sample statistics you will need to do this question, but for parts (a) and (d) you are required to do the rest of the calculations by hand, using a calculator and showing working.

(a)  Estimate the population mean weight of obese young women in Namibia at the beginning of 2019, using a 95% confidence interval (show all working). Make sure you ONLY select obese young women.

(b) Check the appropriate conditions and assumptions needed for the validity of the confidence interval or hypothesis test for the population mean weight of obese young women in Namibia (include an appropriate graph to support your answer).

(c) From historical data, a researcher knows that the average weight of obese young women in Namibia is 85.5 kg. Perform a hypothesis test to see if there is evidence to support her suspicion that the average weight of obese young women at the beginning of 2019 was greater than this, based on the data in this study (regardless of whether the conditions in part (b) are satisfied).

(d) Calculate the value of a suitable test statistic for the test in part (c).

(e) Find the P-value of the test, based on the test statistic calculated in part (d), and write a meaningful conclusion at the 1% level of significance.

(f)  Now, check your answers for parts (d) and (e) by finding the value of the test statistic and the P-value using SPSS. Include SPSS output in your answer and comment on the comparison with the hand calculated values. Explain any differences.

Question 2

Use the information in the dataset women20.sav to answer the following questions. You should use SPSS to calculate any sample statistics you will need to do this question, but for parts (d)-(g) you are required to do the rest of the calculations by hand, using a calculator.

According to the Namibian Bureau of Statistics, 9% of young women had no formal or up to year 10 educational qualifications before 2019. The researcher believes that the proportion of such qualifications of young women was no longer 9% at the beginning of 2019.

(a) What is the variable of interest to the researcher?

(b)  State the appropriate hypotheses (define any symbols used) to test the researcher’s claim that the proportion of young women in Namibia with no formal or only an up to year 10 educational qualification at the beginning of 2019 was no longer 9%.

Question 3

Use the information in the dataset women20.sav again. The weight of the young women was measured at the beginning of 2019 and in a follow-up at the end of 2019. Now the researcher wants to know if, on average, the weight of obese young women at the end of 2019 differs from the weight of the same cohort at the beginning of 2019. Make sure you select ONLY obese young women.

(a)  State appropriate hypotheses (define any symbols used).

(b)  State (but do not check) the assumptions for carrying out this test. Describe the assumptions in the context of this question.

(c)   Without using SPSS, calculate the value of a suitable test statistic for this test.

(d) Without using SPSS, calculate the P-value of this test.

(e)  Interpret the P-value and describe the outcome of the test in the context of this  question
