Assignment Task :

Introduction

In this assessment, you will be given a scenario with a research question, the description of a data set and a lot of R output. You will not be asked to analyse any data yourself. Only some of the R output is relevant to the research question. Your first task is to assess this output and choose which parts of it are useful to answer the research question.

Once you have decided which of the output is useful, we want you to write an Abstract of no more than 350 words with the standard subheadings provided. To do this you will need to use a combination of the R output, the information that is given to you in the scenario below, and what you know or can find out about the importance of the research question to write to introduce the research findings.

After you have submitted your abstract, you will then be asked some questions about how you approached the research question given the data and how you decided which parts of the R output to choose. Note that after you submit the Abstract, you will not be able to go back and edit it.

Scenario and research question

You obtain a patient-level data set from a diabetes clinic which has information on all patients who attended it during the short study period. People with suspected diabetes are referred to this diabetic clinic by a general doctor for assessment, so only a minority of them will actually have the disease. At the clinic, various measurements are taken such as blood pressure, blood lipids (cholesterol types), height, weight and HbA1c (a marker of how much sugar is attached to red blood cells and hence a diagnostic test for the disease).

The research question we want you to answer is:

What are the factors associated with higher systolic blood pressure?

Before you look at all the output, think through how you would get to know the data set, how you would summarise and explore variables listed above, and how you would build and assess the appropriate regression model or models to help you to answer the research question. Write and submit the Abstract and then answer the subsequent questions.

SUBSEQUENT QUESTIONS

1 When getting to know the data set, which of the parts of the output did you consider useful?

  1. Summaries for each variable in the data set

  2. Histogram of systolic BP

  3. Cross-tabulation of age and gender

  4. t-test for gender and cholesterol

  5. correlation between height and weight

  6. correlation between ratio and BMI

  7. correlation between systolic BP and ratio

  8. chi-squared test between gender and smoking

  9. linear model with just age group as predictor

  10. linear model with all the potential predictors (except height, weight, HDL and cholesterol)

  11. linear model including the interaction between smoking and family history of diabetes

  12. Kaplan-Meier plot of age and diabetes

  13. Cox regression model with all the potential predictors (except height, weight, HDL and cholesterol)

  14. Log-rank test for gender
