Assignment Task

“One month into our marriage, my husband committed horrific violent crimes. In that instant, the life I knew was destroyed. I vowed that one day I would be whole again. This is my story.” When Shannon Moroney got married in October 2005, she had no idea that her happy life as a newlywed was about to come crashing down around her. One month after her wedding, a police officer arrived at her door to tell her that her husband, Jason, had been arrested and charged in the brutal assault and kidnapping of two women. In the aftermath of these crimes, Shannon dealt with a heavy burden of grief, the stress and publicity of a major criminal investigation, and the painful stigma of guilt by association, all while attempting to understand what had made Jason turn to such violence. For this assignment, you will address one of the following questions:

1. Shannon talks about being given the “official status of victim” but when she goes to victim services for help, she did not get the reception she expected. (p. 143-146). Reflect on her experience and develop a detailed case management plan that would address Shannon’s needs;

2. Develop a detailed case management plan for the two women Jason assaulted that covers the immediate aftermath of the assaults through to Jason’s sentencing including services offered by Corrections Canada, Parole Board, etc. Explain each referral you make and why you making it, what services they can offer, etc.

3. Shannon focuses a lot on Restorative Justice and forgiveness (which are not the same thing). On page 139, she says, “Maybe forgiveness could be as liberating for the victim as it was for the perpetrator.” On page 327, she says justice in courtrooms rarely fosters healing for victims. Jason has asked to engage in an RJ dialogue with Shannon and his sexual assault survivors. You are a CSC RJ mediator and you have been asked to develop a plan for a possible encounter. Explain how the issues may be different for Shannon and the survivors, why each may or may not want to participate, what the benefit and risks may be, etc.
