Facts related to the offence
• Julie was recently convicted on two criminal charges: (1) Uttering threats and (2) Assault causing bodily harm.
• Julie got in a fight with another girl at school. She punched the girl in the face, resulting in the victim breaking her nose.
• When asked why she had attacked the other girl, Julie claimed that the girl had been flirting with Julie’s boyfriend.
• Julie had previously threatened the victim by sending her a text that told her not to talk to Julie’s boyfriend “or else she would make her sorry”.
• The victim and Julie’s boyfriend were previously in an intimate relationship but had broken up about a year ago. They had remained friendly with each other since.

• As a child, Julie lived with her biological mother, who is addicted to alcohol. Her biological father, who abused both drugs and alcohol, left the family when she was 6 months old. Julie was neglected by her mother and sexually abused by her mother’s long-term boyfriend.
• After it was reported that Julie was often absent from school, she came to the attention of the ministry. Julie was removed from her mother’s care when she was 11, and has since lived with 3 foster families over the past 4 years.
