Assignment Task

Q1
a) Analog and digital signals are two types of signals that are commonly used in data communication. Discuss 4 advantages of using digital signals compared to analog signals. Discuss the differences between a modem and a router and how they enable Wi-Fi Internet in a household. Draw a diagram to show those devices with clear annotations about the types of signals (analog, digital) in your home network to illustrate your answer.

Q2
a) Give the formula for bandwidth. What is the difference between Frequency and Bandwidth?

b) What are the frequency ranges of AM and FM radio broadcasting?

c) Frequency modulation (FM) has been used widely in radio broadcasting. Discuss how FM works with a diagram. In your diagram, show the original message signal, the carrier wave and the FM signal.

We recommend using either Excel or Word (or other softwares) to draw diagrams. Hand-drawn diagrams are acceptable, but the details must be clear. Marks will be deducted for poor presentation. Discuss 2 limitations of FM technology.

d) A baseband signal with a bandwidth of 13.5 kHz is sampled 27,000 times each second. Is the sampling rate sufficient to reproduce the original signal? If each sample is represented using 16 bits, what is the data rate of the system in bits per second (bps)? Show your working.

Q3

Draw diagrams of the encoding of the data stream 1000111101 using the following encoding schemes:
a) Unipolar
b) Bipolar-AMI
c) NRZ-I
d) Differential Manchester

You should use either Excel or Word (or other softwares) to draw diagrams. Hand drawn or scanned diagrams are also accepted but they must be clear. Marks will be deducted for poor presentation.

Q4
Calculate the bit rates (in Megabits per second) necessary for transmitting in real time the video streams described in a) and b) below, assume that no data compression is used:
a) Video resolution of 1920 x 1080, 3 bytes / pixel, 30 frames / second.
b) Video resolution of 2048 x 1536, 2 bytes / pixel, 60 frames / second
c) Calculate the time (in minutes) to download:

  • A 1-minute video clip of quality as stated in (b) over a 30 Mbps modem?

Q5

Given the data bit sequence 11101011 and the divisor bit pattern P = 11011
a) Calculate the CRC check bits using the base 2 method. What is the codeword? Show all calculation steps.
b) Assume that the codeword you calculated in part a) is received by the receiver without any error. Apply CRC base 2 method on the receiver side to justify that there is no error. Show all calculation steps.
c) Assume that the receiver receives the codeword: 110011111011

Apply the CRC shifted polynomial method on the receiver side to determine if error exists. Show all calculation steps.
