Assignment Task

So far you have done some basic identification work on your primary source (assignment 1) and then provided an analysis of that source, considering carefully what it was saying, why it was saying it and what kinds of ideas, issues or events we discovered through that primary source (assignment 2) .

In this assignment, you take this analysis one step further: you consider whether or not, or to what extent, your source corroborates (or provides evidence for) ideas that most historians agree on, or why it doesn't.

Here is an example from my own research.

I have as my primary source a small note (which I found in the International Red Cross Archives in Geneva), dated 1948 and originating in Saigon, of a French Judge dismissing a charge of war crimes against a Japanese officer on the grounds of insufficient evidence of the crime, and evidence of the good moral character of the officer in question.

How does this source challenge or uphold the evidence we previously had about the conduct of war crimes trials in the French context?

  • I can use the source, for example, to undermine a prevalent idea that all war crimes trials were so-called Kangaroo courts, in which nobody really cared about justice and was out for revenge (although I would be guilty of creating a false dichotomy - because in fact the research is more nuanced than that),

  • or I could use it to make a point about assumptions of justice in the French trials in Saigon generally,

  • or I could make a point about the use of evidence in this particular case (there was as little solid evidence of the crime as there was solid evidence of the man's good character).

My essay question could be something like 'French war crimes trials in Saigon were a clear case of victors' justice: discuss.'

Or I could say: 'Analyse the use of evidence in the pursuit of Japanese war criminals at the French Permanent Military Tribunal in Saigon'.

Or I could decide to do something else: 'compare and contrast the use of evidence in the trial of major X, with the evidence used in the trial of sergeant Y in the same year'.

In each case, I would have to a ) do a lot of research on what else was going on in Saigon at the time and b) what was going on in war crimes trials generally, and c) be familiar with what everyone else had written on war crimes trials.

You have a much less obscure primary source to work with, and there is a lot more secondary material available to you, so you should not find it difficult to corroborate your primary source with some good research.
