Assignment Task:

TASK:

Due to concerns about employee stress, a large company commissioned you to conduct a study to compare the effectiveness of two wellness programs (tai chi and yoga) in reducing employee stress levels. A control group was also included. The company assembled a group of volunteer employees to participate in the study during the first half of their lunch hour each day for a 10-week period. Their stress levels were to be measured just before the beginning of the program and then in week 10 at the completion of it.

Their stress levels were to be measured just before the beginning of the program and then in week 10 at the completion of it.
Question 1.
Now answer these questions:
What are the study variables? Describe them. (1 mark)
What is the research design of this study? (1 mark)
What statistical analysis/es could you use to assess whether the programs reduced stress levels from pre-to-post? (1 mark)
Suppose that you drafted this graph that illustrates the participants’ mean stress level for each wellness program from pre to post. Now interpret what this graph means in terms of the outcome of the experiment. (1 mark; 100 words)

d) Consider this graph. Interpret what this graph indicates in terms of likely significance of the two main effects and the interaction F-tests (i.e., which effects would be significant and which would not)? (1 mark; 100 words)

e) The violation of sphericity is a serious problem for within-subjects, repeated measures designs. Using your own words, explain what sphericity means, and why violation of assumption of sphericity is a problem. (2 marks; 50 words)
f) What are the two alternatives, which can be used to correct the F-tests in your ANOVA if sphericity is problematic? (1 mark)
g) When you were designing the study, the company suggested that it would be easiest to run if they could have all of the employees at one site receive the tai chi, all of the employees at another site receive the yoga, and all of the employees at a third sight in the control condition. Would you agree, and how would you justify your answer? (2 marks; 70 words)
Question 2.
a) You want to develop and validate a brief scale of SPSS self-efficacy. From your own experience undertaking the stats unit STAT4002 and being motivated by your teacher to build your confidence around using the program, you think that the main domains might include appraisal of own abilities, mastery through practice, and encouragement to engage with the SPSS. Your aim is to develop a brief scale that represents the construct well. What are the steps you would undertake from this point forward to make sure your new scale achieves adequate content validity? (2 marks; 150 words)
b) Using your own words, explain what is meant by a nomological net of a construct, and why would you want to identify one? You can provide/draw an example nomological net for SPSS self-efficacy) (2 marks; 100 words)
c) If you had unlimited time and resources, how could you demonstrate that this new scale is reliable using a range of tests? Be as specific as possible by proposing how each would be achieved. (2 marks; 100 words)
d) How could you demonstrate that this new scale of SPSS self-efficacy has good construct validity using a range of tests? Be precise and propose specific examples. (2 marks; 100 words)
e) When you run item reduction analyses, you realise that most items on one of the three identified domains of the SPSS self-efficacy scale show low item-total correlations (< .30) and some items have negative sign. Explain what might be going on, what are the likely consequences, and what could be done about it (given you have unlimited time and resources)? (2 marks; 100 words)
Question 3.
The news story claimed that children who lie would become successful citizens. Imagine a parallel universe where the government was foolish enough to believe the story and decided to implement a systematic program of infant conditioning. Some infants were trained not to lie, others were brought up as normal, and a final group was trained in the art of lying. Thirty years later they collected data on how successful these children were as adults. They measured their salary and other two indices of success - their family life and work life, on a 0 - 10 rating scale. They conducted a MANOVA to compare the 3 intervention groups on the success measures (DVs) - salary, family, and work. Review the SPSS output from this analysis.

  • Explain why the MANOVA is the best analytical approach for this data set. (3 marks; 200 words)
  • Is there a sufficient sample size in each group of the IV? (1 mark; 70 words)
  • Describe the results of this experiment and the analysis in APA format (4 marks; 250 words)
  • Suggest one way of following up the significant outcome of this analysis. (1 mark)
  • Propose/set up a planned contrast that tests the hypothesis that the lying prevented group differs from the combined normal parenting and lying encouraged groups on the measures of success. (1 mark)

Question 4.
Researchers (Chapman & Lickel, 2016) collected data from 815 participants. Participants were asked about their support for government action to tackle the causes of climate change (govact). They were also asked about their level of experienced negative emotions about climate change (negemot) and age. Higher scores indicated more of that given construct. They assessed this simple moderation model:
