Question 1  The Data-Link Layer. A simple network is shown below with address information provided in the table that follows ( COMP2250)

a) Identify the manufacturer of each device.

b) A user on PC1 opens a command prompt and runs the following command: ping 192.168.0.2

Explain what traffic this command will create, both directly and indirectly, and how this traffic will affect the caches and tables within each device. In your answer, you should assume that the caches and tables in each device are empty before the ping command is run.

 

Question 2   The Network Layer.

The university is made up of 7 top-level organisational units (5 faculties and two associated entities.) Each of these organisational units has a different number of departments. The table below lists a possible top-level networking arrangement for the university

a) For each of the five faculties create a subnetting scheme that accommodates the number of departments within each faculty whilst maximising the number of hosts within each subnet. Each subnet should include the following:

• The network address

• The broadcast address

• The netmask in slash notation

• The netmask in dotted-decimal notation

• The maximum number of hosts that each resulting subnet can support.

You should complete five separate subnetting exercises, one for each faculty, with the number of subnets in each exercise determined by the number of departments within that faculty.

 

Question 3  Transport and Application Layers.

The OSI reference model consists of seven layers, three of which exist above the transport layer, whereas in TCP/IP all of the functionality of these three layers is delegated in a policy-free manner to a single layer, namely the application layer. You will recall that each layer exists to address a specific part of the problem of transferring data from one application to another on the network. In 2012 Google introduced QUIC, a protocol that would improve performance for web traffic. After some revisions the IETF has adopted it in a draft form as a proposed standard. QUIC follows a policy-free approach — its functionality is implemented within the application layer, yet it is solving a problem that is really the job of the transport layer.
