Assignment Task:

Topic:

Community disaster preparedness and mitigation.

Instructions With the complexity of disaster threats facing our Country, it is inevitable that we will all eventually be impacted by at least one of Australia’s key disaster hazards during our lifetime. While industry largely recognises disaster risk and actively prepares for, and attempts to mitigate against the impact of a disaster, the same cannot always be said for the rest of society. Yet, the risks of disaster to the rest of society are just as inevitable, with impacts that are equally obvious. A common theme at the individual and community level is that emergencies happen

‘somewhere else’ or to ‘someone else’. Unfortunately, such sentiments are persisting in Australian communities, despite the ever-present threat – and reality – of disaster. This attitude must be addressed. Many emergencies can be life-threatening and/or costly but they are also foreseeable and they are actionable – now. Unfortunately, while people acknowledge the risks intellectually or notionally, the impetus to follow up with action appears to be lacking. How can we change this? The task for this assignment is to focus on your local community and discuss how disaster preparedness and mitigation could be encouraged and better implemented.

Students should:

1. Clearly identify their local community

2. Summarise the hazard-profile for your community, making reference to any specific emergencies or disasters which have impacted the community in the past

3. What is currently happening at the community-level in regards to disaster preparedness and mitigation

4. How could these efforts be further encouraged/improved

5. What additional disaster preparedness and mitigation activities could be implemented within your local community?

 a. Give specific examples

b. Try to think innovatively

c. Consider what types of activities would be most engaging to the community

d. How would the examples you have chosen help to improve preparedness and/or mitigation within your community?
