The learning emphasis of this project is to allow students to apply knowledge of geometric road design to produce a road alignment in the civil design program ‘12D model’.

? Superelevation/Widening Calculations

Calculate the superelevation required on each horizontal curve, Superelevation development Length using the relative grade method, and then calculate the distances and positions for the “Tangent Runout Tro” and “Superelevation Runoff Sro”. Label the SSD, ESD and zero-cross fall points on your schedule of chainages. Show calculations for any required Widening and Superelevation.

Rectangular Coordinates (Eastings and Northings) & Schedule of Chainages

Show an example calculating the Eastings and Northings for each of the following • at some Chainage on the straight portion • at a chainage on a Horizontal Curve (this does not include the tangent to curve point) Use the starting point, bearings, curve radii, IP’s, and your knowledge of trigonometry to calculate the Eastings and Northings of the chainages.

Calculate the required culvert size

Calculate the required culvert size for the creek using Talbots Formula (Creek 1: Area = 12ha, C = 0.7, Creek 2: Area = 8ha, C=0.6, Pipe Class = “Z”) and calculate the minimum allowable RL for the road surface above the creek bed at that chainage.'

Calculations for the Vertical Curves.

Once earthworks are +/-10%, design the final grade lines. Calculate the IPs of the grade lines and then determine the required lengths of two VCs. Verify the Design RLs of the Chainages at the IP points (using MO) and all other curve Chainages (using IOs). Show calculations and reasoning for one crest and one sag curve. If you have more than 2 vertical curves, these other curves do not need to be shown. As with section 4, an output from 12d is not satisfactory and excel is probably the easiest way to manage this.

Cross Sections in 12d:

Show the design and existing surface levels at required chainages, the carriageway width (3.5m each side) with normal 3% crossfall on straights. Show the amount of Widening and Superelevation required on required Chainages affected by curves.

Justification of Alignment and Group Project Summary

A short (200-word maximum) report on the 12D group project including justification of alignment (missing aboriginal heritage landmarks), other considerations, difficult and easy parts of using the software and general experience.
