How do the effects of childhood poverty later affect employment opportunities in young adults?
Research has shown that as adults, impoverished children’s stress level increases which creates a wear and tear on their brains. Impoverished people are usually not surrounded by people with the right mindset to discuss the paths to come out of poverty. As a result, this makes it more difficult for families to end the poverty cycle. They typically stay poor because they don’t know or have the resources to learn the skills needed to climb out of poverty. You want to understand how do the effects of childhood poverty later affect employment opportunities in young adults? I have consulted two academic journal articles, one focus on the long-term effect of childhood poverty and the other is about state budget challenges as it relates to poverty. I also consulted two web-based sources both on how childhood poverty effects adulthood.
In the web-based article, “How Poverty Can Follow Children into Adulthood,” Priyanka Boghani, a writer for PBS Frontline, reports that children living in long-term poverty suffer educationally and ultimately have problems as adult employees. Studies that have shown adults who were impoverished as children still struggle . One study example Priyanka gives us is, “Studies show that children who grow up poor have a harder time escaping poverty as adults. For example, in one 2009 study by the National Center for Children in Poverty at Columbia University, researchers found that children who grew up poor were not only more likely to experience poverty as adults, but that the likelihood of being poor in adulthood went up with the number of years spent in poverty as a child.” Poverty is not just limited to people of color, other races are also faced with poverty, however black and Hispanic children suffer the most. Another example the author gives us is, “While white children experience poverty at a rate of 11 percent, around 27 percent of Hispanic children, 31 percent of black children and 34 percent of Native American children in America today are growing up poor.” One factor at play for why poor children go on to struggle as adults is education.” When poor child lack the basic resources to get a decent education, it leads to problems finding and keeping employment as adults. Clearly, the examples provided show the devastating effects of childhood poverty, how it stretches into adulthood and ultimately reaching into the pockets, of these young adults by not being able to find employment because of educational deficiencies.
