1.Explain how you would draw children’s attention to symbol systems.
Encourage child to create patterns by arranging coloured blocks, crayons, different sized objects, or stringing bead, educators can also encourage children to create patterns with their physical movements such as “jump, jump, clap, jump, jump, clap.” And ask them about the pattern they are creating.  Also allow children to have access to everyday materials that they can use to create patterns and sort. 

2.Describe how you would demonstrate that you value children’s linguistic heritage and would encourage the use and acquisition of home languages.

If English is the child’s second language, then you could learn common words from the language that the child speaks so you can communicate with them. [common phrases such as good morning, how are you]. You could also ask the parents to come in and do a lesson about their language and heritage.   

3.Describe how you would facilitate families’ diverse contributions to the service.
If there is different cultures within the centre you could ask the families to bring in traditional toys/ or recourses that their child and other children can use, you could also talk to the director about implementing traditional meals into the menu for lunchtimes. 

4.Give two examples of how you could share children’s successes with families.
Have a conversation with the family at pick up/drop of to tell them how well their child is doing.
If it is a piece of the child’s work, you could give it to the families if it isn’t being put up around the classroom. 

5.What is a ‘critical period’ in early brain development?
It is when the nervous system is sensitive to environmental stimuli. If a child is not exposed to the right amount of stimuli to develop an function, the child then may have difficulties developing later in life or in some scenarios they may never develop at all.
