Assessment Outline 

Purpose of the task 

To progress towards demonstrating application and competency in the units: 

CHCAGE001 Facilitate the empowerment of older people 

Criteria 

The assessment task will demonstrate the participant’s ability to: 

  • Develop relationships with older people 
  • Provide services to older people 
  • Support the rights of older people 
  • Promote health and re-element of older people 

Location 

Responses to the questions are to be completed in your own time; information may be collected from your workplace. May also be completed during classroom session however this will be at the discretion of your trainer 

Assessment task 

To demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to respond to the goals and aspirations of older people and provide support services in a manner that focuses on improving health outcomes and quality of life, using a person-centred approach, you are required to undertake the following: 

1. Read all of the questions for this unit of competency before commencing.

2. Answer all the short answer questions for this unit of competency. Keep in mind you are studying a Nationally Recognised Certificate III unit of competency.

3. Your answers must reflect the depth of knowledge and understanding expected of a person who can work without supervision and demonstrate a level of judgement and decision-making.

4. All questions and tasks must be true and correct to be assessed as satisfactory. 5. Complete the assessment sign off sheet with your assessor.

Assessment Task 2 – Case Studies for CHCDIV001 

Case Study 1 – Mrs Greenwood 

Mrs Greenwood is 85 years old and has been living in her own home since her husband died 9 years ago. She has been actively involved in all activities of her local church for the past 40 years. Mrs Greenwood has one son, who lives about 3 hours away. Approximately 4 weeks ago Mrs Greenwood tripped going down her back stairs and fractured the neck of her left femur. She was admitted to hospital for surgery and has made a fairly good postoperative recovery, however, she is restricted in her mobility and fears falling again. She has haemoserous drainage from the distal end of her suture line, requiring dressings. She is due for discharge from hospital in 3 days time, due to a bed shortage. Mrs Greenwood’s son has to return to his job tomorrow and will only be able to visit his mother at weekends, leaving his mother alone day and night during the week. 

1. Think about the range of local health and community services that you could access for Mrs Greenwood. In the space below, make a list of the services and provide a reason for each and briefly describe how the service would benefit Mrs Greenwood. 

2. List the dietary requirements for healthy ageing. 

Case Study 2 - Mrs Jacobs 

You arrive for duty at 7 am and find Mrs Jacobs sitting on the side of her bed, very upset. Once you have calmed her a little, she tells you that the night nurse is cruel to her. You notice that Mrs Jacobs has a fresh skin tear and bruising to her right shin. Mrs Jacobs does not want you to report the incident to anyone, because she fears reprisal. How would you deal with this problem? 

Case Study 3 - Harry 

Scenario: 

Harry is an 83-year-old Indigenous resident of an aged care organisation you work for. You are largely responsible for his care and support. Harry recently entered the residential care home because his wife Mary was unable to adequately care for him anymore. Harry has severe arthritis, incontinence, early onset dementia, and some hearing loss. 

These questions below require responses between 5 to 8 sentences long. Answer each question to write a report outlining: 

1. How you would develop a relationship with Harry.
