Poe Technical information

This Portfolio of Evidence (PoE) is the only assessment for CCOM7312 and will assess both Learning Unit 1 and Learning Unit 2. You may be required to look back on your resources used in your 2nd year, for further guidance. You will also need to do some independent reading and research on the material covered in both learning units. The Portfolio is made up of two sections: Section A and Section B as outlined below:

Section A: Corporate Social Investment Strategy
• Create a corporate social investment (CSI) strategy.
• Provide a communication plan for the CSI strategy.

Section B: Social Media Campaign
• Create a social media campaign supporting the social responsibility programme.

The ultimate goal of the PoE is to provide a realistic and implementable CSI Strategy and an accompanying social media strategy. While there is more than one way of doing things, you need to construct a strategy that you feel best fits the context that you are provided with and moves the ‘organisation’ or ‘campaign’ to greater efficiencies.

Organisation 2: Great Commission United

Mario van Niekerk was eight years old when his family fell apart. His father died in a gas explosion, and his mother was struggling to make ends meet. Van Niekerk was angry, alone, and without mentors. At the age of 11, a gang in his community offered Van Niekerk the sense of belonging he was yearning for. In trying to forge a family, he lost his childhood. Years later, when Van Niekerk became a father, he saw himself in his son’s eyes. He couldn’t allow his child to grow up the same
way he did. Van Niekerk knew he had to end the cycle of gangsterism.

When Van Niekerk started his own family, he realised that he needed to be a positive influence in his own community. Van Niekerk believed sport, soccer in particular, could provide the youth of Heideveld with a sense of kinship. He formed Great Commission United (GCU) in 2001 to provide kids with a positive channel for their needs. With his knowledge of gangsterism, its roots and effects, Van Niekerk appealed to the community for change. But because of his history, they didn’t trust him. As the organisation grew, Van Niekerk demonstrated that reformation is possible. When children join the programme, their past isn’t questioned. At GCU, they are
encouraged to take responsibility for their actions. With support and forgiveness, the kids are given the opportunity to take a new path in life.

GCU aims to deal with notorious gangsterism and high youth-unemployment problems in volatile neighbourhoods. They address the education-based poverty trap in impoverished communities through various long-term projects. The first project was geared to teach children how to play soccer.

In addition to the soccer academy, GCU partners with local primary and high schools to provide mentoring, sports and after-school programs to keep learners engaged within the school environment. The learners receive academic support through an educational program that ensures individual attention so that learners can do well in class. Doing well in school reduces the changes of learners leaving school before completing grade 12 which gives them an opportunity to find employment which breaks the cycle of education-based poverty.
