Research Question

1.1 What is a trauma for Indian Sex Workers: How do they negotiate with it?

There is the aplenty modern discourse around what one considers to be a traumatic experience. However, the circumstances and conditions of the life of a sex worker make them normalise what other individuals may consider being a traumatic experience. For an individual, an action such as having coitus with multiple partners can mean extreme physical and emotional trauma. However, for sex workers, their bodies have been trained to endure sexual labour. For them, the act of motherhood can become a relatively more traumatic experience, where they may have to separate from their child for relatively long periods of time as they carry out sex work. Or, they may have to stop sex work for 9 months as they conceive the child. This may create financial duress and therefore, emotional trauma for the sex worker. Thus, as I read more feminist discourse around sex workers, I developed an interest in understanding what trauma even means for sex workers in the first place, and how they carry out their daily lives with diligent momentum and negotiate with their traumas.

John Paul Lederach and Angela Jill Lederach (2010) explain that healing is an important aspect of reconciliation, one that represents a complex reality, rarely experienced in neat, sequential order. Therefore, they propose to de-link politically expedient notions of reconciliation as a one-time event. (J. P. Lederach & A. J. Lederach., 2010. When Blood and Bones Cry Out: Journeys through the Soundscape of Healing and Reconciliation. 1 ed. New York: Oxford University Press, pp.10,11.)  Thus I will also attempt to understand the methods of healing used by male and female sex workers and understand their reconciliation with the very society that denounces them. Storytelling as a form of recounting the trauma can also become a method of catharsis. It will be interesting to explore different dimensions and methods of healing by sex workers in my research.

1.2 Research Methodology and Methods of Field Work

Methodology

This research is a qualitative research and I will use experiential accounts from doing fieldwork with 3 NGOs, namely Kathkatha, Apne Aap Women Worldwide and Naz Foundation. As a survivor of sexual, physical and emotional violence, and as a woman who was failed by the administrative and justice system, I bring with me empathy in my research. My lens is of a feminist standpoint theory and I will analyze how sex workers negotiate with their trauma using first-hand accounts, autobiographies, films and literature on sex workers.

Methods

My methods include autobiographic literature of sex workers and feminist literature and cinema that gives me an understanding of their day to day experiences. The interviews will follow a semi-structure, oral format and will be recorded for accurate transcription with due permissions of the interviewees. I will take the help of the 3 NGOs to gather consent of the sex workers in sharing their stories of trauma which I will then use as a case study to detail out their traumas. I will then use additional sources such as secondary source (literature, films, documentaries, academic papers) and first-hand interviews asking sex workers to detail out how they negotiate with their trauma. I will maintain anonymity with their identities for sex work is still a taboo and considered risky work in India.
