Assignment Task :

Introduction

On April 16th, 2020, at about 2:30 in the afternoon, Peel Regional Homicide detectives responded to a frantic call from a young 45 year old mother and teacher.  Her husband, one Hesoded Jopling, had gone for some necessary groceries, and had not returned.  Upon tracing the walk from the house to the store, the police stumbled upon a grizzly crime scene in the local park.  Mr. Jopling was found dead, and there was definitely signs of foul play.

Detectives know they have a homicide on their hands.  To build a case, they need your help.  After all, you are a young, newly assigned (and incredibly intelligent) forensic detective eager to break your first big case.  Sherlock Holmes was known for using the quip “elementary, my dear Watson”.  As soon as you arrive at the park, however, you discover that nothing about this murder is quite so elementary.  The case quickly becomes known as “A Whack in the Woods”.

The victim is quickly identified as one Mr. Hesoded Jopling.  She seemed to have a slight smile on her face, though she has an alibi for what appears to be the time of the murder – her children place her in the house all afternoon.  Foul play is definitely suspected, and a nearby camera was able to ID four locals in the area at the alleged time of the alleged crime.  The four suspects are Ms Shed Idit, Ms Noshed Idit, Mr. Po P. Pants, and Mr. Twa Smee.  They are in custody, but have admitted to nothing.  In fact, they have now lawyered up, and unless we can link them to the crime, they will walk free – if they are actually involved. The boundaries of the crime scene are secure, and within the boundaries of the scene, evidence is being collected.  The forensic pathologist and the coroner (who conducted the autopsy) narrowed the day and time of death to between 4:00 and 8:00 pm on April 16th, 2020.  There does not appear to have been any rain since the crime.

Your task

Imagine that you are a rookie forensic identification specialist assigned by your grumpy boss, Captain Joe Pling, to investigate this suspected homicide, which was apparently committed in the local Park.

It is your task to decipher the clues found at the crime scene, assist homicide detectives to secure a conviction of the guilty and exonerate the innocent – no small feat, to be sure.

You must assist homicide detectives (who will undoubtedly take all the glory) by conducting relevant tests on the crime scene and on any physical evidence collected from it.

By the end, you must product a brief, well written forensic report that police could use to arrest a suspect for Peel’s 6th homicide of the year.

In this report, you will demonstrate an understanding of the five (5) different forensic tests or technologies which are BEST suited to determine the following:

  1. The date, time, and cause of death

  2. The person responsible for the crime (if indeed a crime was committed)

  • Your report must be word processed in Times New Roman/Arial size 12 font with 1” margins, double spaced with a title page.

  • It should include a bibliography, properly formatted, on where your forensic information came from – your text will not be enough.

  • The due date for this assignment will be Wednesday April 23rd, 2020

Process

  1. Review the entire assignment from beginning to end.  Highlight, underline, and ask questions as you read.  Sketch, visualize, ask, and think!

  2. Read the Witnesses, Suspects and resources pages, and pages 193-201 from Law in Action (attached).  You may also wish to do some on-line research.

  3. Isolate the five specific forensic tests/technologies that you could apply to the evidence at the crime scene which would BEST assist you in determining the W4/H of this case (Who, What, When, Where, and How).  For the purposes of this assignment, assume that our budget has been slashed due to government cutbacks – we may at least be realistic about that!
