Case Studies
1. Brian
Brian, a 35 year old man who is feeling gloomy and depressed, has been referred by General Practitioner for counselling. While his job as an IT technician for Computer Whiz is going well it isn’t really a challenge any longer in fact he feels bored at work and the days seem long-he is not all motivated in regard to changing anything though as that would require further training.

The GP has assessed Brian and does not think he is clinically depressed but needs some counselling to assist him look at what the issues are and what he could do to regain a sense of well-being. This is your second session with Brian, you concur with the GP’s assessment but need to explore some of the issues a little further.

Brian works as an IT technician. He has been married for ten years to Laura and they have three children aged 8, 6 and 4 years. They purchased their own home just after they got married and have no financial concerns. Laura work part-time as a teacher aid at the local primary school.

Brian usually works out regularly at a gym. While Laura seems happy with work and family life Brian feels he wants more but doesn’t know what ‘more’ might be.  He almost got into a relationship with another woman who works closely with him at the office but didn’t really want an ‘office affair’ as he sees that could lead to problems. Perhaps a trip overseas (alone) would be better.  Brian has a reasonable sense of humour and usually enjoys doing fun things but doesn’t know how to ‘play’
anymore.

You need to make up the rest of the story to suit your employment situation and for you to write it up as a case study. You can change any aspect of the case.

2. Sheila
Sheila is a divorced woman with a 22-year old daughter called Jane.  Sheila has been referred by her General Practitioner.  The GP thinks Sheila needs to get help with a family problem.  Jane is coming home to live again (this is the third time). Jane is in debt from setting up flats and having a student loan. Jane has chucked in her job because it is too stressful.  Sheila is resentful and angry. You agree there is relationship problem-this is your second session.

Background information

Shelia dropped out of university when she got pregnant with Jane and married her ex-husband. Her parents, now dead, financed Shelia and her husband into the house she now lives in.  Her husband left her when Jane was 14 years old. Shelia got to live in the family home on the understanding that once Jane had either had completed university, or had left school and was working, she would have the option of buying him out or the house would be sold. This has always annoyed her as her parents had bought the house in the first place and at the time of their death there was no money left. Furthermore, husband never offered any financial assistance for her over and above the minimal support order. He did try to see Jane regularly.

Shelia works fulltime in a dress shop. Six years ago when her ex-husband wanted his share of the house she got a second weekend job as a waitress so she could get the money needed to pay him out. This meant she also had to get a second mortgage. She managed to pay him out last year and now is the sole owner of
the house but does need to budget carefully as financially she can just manage the mortgages on her income from the dress shop. She doesn’t want to keep working two jobs.

Thus, while she has helped Jane out before Shelia feels she can’t afford to keep her now. Furthermore, Jane could have gone to her father’s new house this time but she doesn’t like his new partner.  She wants to tell Jane she can’t come to live with her but doesn’t feel confident she can do so without causing a real rift in their relationship.

You need to make up the rest of the story to suit your employment situation and for you to write it up as a case study.  You can change any aspect of the case.
