Assignment Task -

Scope of the Assignment: This assignment is the first of the three assessments which are associated with this module and is worth 30% of the total marks available for the module. To complete this assignment, you are required to prepare  a survey of current knowledge in a particular scientific area, i.e. complete a literature review. To achieve this, you will  have to identify and locate appropriate information, analyse and evaluate this information and then communicate this  information in a concise and well-structured written piece. You will be required to carry out library and literature  research to complete this assignment.

Size of the Assignment: The literature review should be between 3,000 and 3,500 words in length, and can include  images, tables and flow-charts as appropriate to the topic. This is equivalent to approximately 12-14 pages of double spaced typed text using a standard font. However, as you may use images, tables and other material as part of your  review, your page count may be somewhat greater than this guide.

Demonstrating a link with the literature: This assignment must include in-text citations and a reference list, to  highlight the sources of information you have used to complete the literature review. For a literature review, these  sources would be peer-reviewed scientific texts including journal articles, academic text books and other sources of  scholarly information. A minimum of 20-24 references are required for the literature review and the standard Harvard  style of referencing should be used for generation of the reference list. It is recommended that a referencing software  platform (e.g. EndNote, Mendeley, Paperpile, Zotero) is used to insert in-text citations and generate the reference list.  Note that you are expected to be familiar with these sources and may be asked to demonstrate familiarity with them.

Plagiarism: You are expected to be familiar with the university policies with regards to plagiarism and how it can be  avoided. To help you in this regard, a draft submission will be available for evaluation of your work in progress. Note  that references present in a reference list will often appear as ‘plagiarised’ although this is not correct, as a correctly  cited reference should be the same as its citation elsewhere in the literature.

Role of the academic advisor/supervisor: Each student is assigned an academic advisor/supervisor for this module.  The role of this person is to assist in the completion of the tasks associated with the module, and to support the  development of your research skills as you progress through the module, as described below.
